According to census records, Stephen was born in Marsh Benham, Berkshire. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Partridge (nee Lawrence) who were married on the 14th November 1805, in Letcombe Regis, Berkshire.

Thomas and Mary also had the following children, who were baptised at St Mary the Virgin, Speen Berkshire:

Harriett, 26th June 1808

Margaret, 18th March 1810

Thomas, 6th February 1814     (mother mistakenly recorded as Margaret)

Edward, 11th June 1815

Joseph, 10th August 1817

Frances, 13th August 1820

Stephen’s father Thomas was a Wheelwright. He was baptised in 1776, in Childrey, Berkshire, the son of James and Anne Partridge (nee Hughes) who were married in c1774, in Stanford in the Vale, Berkshire. Thomas died aged 67, in 1844, he was buried on the 26th February, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

Stephen’s mother Mary was baptised in 1777, in Letcombe Regis, Berkshire, the daughter of Edmond and Miriam Lawrence (nee Cox) who were married in 1765, in Letcombe Regis (Miriam transcribed as Maryum on marriage record)

Stephen married Sarah Hidden in 1854. (Marriage registered in Newbury)

(Sarah Hidden was baptised on the 5th July 1812, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Hidden (nee Garratt) who were married on the 13th December 1793, in Speen, Berkshire)

Stephen and Sarah had a son Thomas Hidden born c1855, in Marsh Benham.

Census records 1841-1881 record Stephen living in Marsh Benham as follows.

1841: Thomas Partridge (60), Stephen (25), Edward (25), all Agricultural Labourers and Frances (20) a Servant.

1851: Stephen (38), a Carpenter and his niece Mary Burton (15).

1861: Stephen (49), Carpenter and Farmer employing 2 men, Sarah (48), their son Thomas (6) and a servant.

1871: Stephen (59), a Farmer of 42 acres, employing 1 man, Sarah (58) and Thomas (16), a Carpenter.

1881: Stephen (69), a Carpenter and Sarah (68).

Stephen was widowed in 1886, Sarah died aged 74 (death registered in Newbury)

The 1891 census records Stephen (80), a General Labourer, as an inmate in the Newbury Workhouse.

Stephen died aged 80, on the 11th July 1891, in the Newbury Workhouse. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th July.
