James, his parents, siblings and early life:

James was born on the 27th May 1812, in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 31st May 1812, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of Charles and Sarah Hill (nee Hollidge) who were married on the 7th November 1795, in Chieveley, Berkshire.

James’s father Charles was baptised on the 24th January 1773, in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of Hugh and Jane Hill (nee Briant) who were married on the 10th February 1772, in Chieveley. Charles died aged 61, in 1834, he was buried on the 12th September, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

James’s mother Sarah Hollidge was born c1772, (place unknown), she died aged 71, in 1843 and was buried on the 13th November, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Charles and Sarah also had the following children:

John, baptised on the 30th April 1796, in Chieveley

Elizabeth, baptised 29th October 1797, in Shaw cum Donnington (born 21st October 1797)

Hannah, born 28th February 1800, baptised on the 2ndMarch 1800, at St Nicolas Newbury

Mary Anne, born 8th February 1802 baptised 28th February 1802, at St Nicolas Newbury

Charles, born 6th December 1803, baptised 16th December 1803, at St Nicolas Newbury

Sarah, born 2nd May 1806, baptised 17th May 1806, at St Nicolas Newbury

Ann, born 18th February 1808, baptised 13th March 1808, at St Nicolas Newbury

Henry, baptised 22nd December 1816, at St Nicolas Newbury

Jane, baptised 3rd March 1819, at St Nicolas Newbury

The 1815 census of Newbury records James (3) living in Whiteman’s Yard on the east side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with his father Charles (43), a Labourer, his mother Sarah (43) and his siblings, Elizabeth (16), Mary (13), Charles (10), Sarah (9) and Ann (7).

James in later life:

James married Susannah Pocock on the 7th July 1834, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury (both were single, witnesses were George Stillman and John Mayo)

(Susanna Harris was born on the 26th January 1811, she was baptised on the 3rdMarch 1811, at St Mary, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of Mary Harris. Mary Harris married John Pocock on the 8th September 1811, at St Mary, Aylesbury, Susannah was then known as Susannah Pocock)

James and Susannah had the following children, born in Newbury:

The 1841 census records James (25), a Labourer, Susannah (30) and their children, Hannah (6), Jane (5), Charles (2) and Emma (11 Days), living in Turnplets Court, (off Bartholomew Street) Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1851 James (38), an Agricultural Labourer, Susan (40), Jane (14), Charles (12), Emma (10), Fanny (7) and Martha (2), were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

The 1861, 1871 and 1881 census records record the family living in the City, Newbury, as follows:

1861: James (49), an Agricultural Labourer, Susannah (52), Fanny (16), a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, Martha (12), Joseph (9), Edmund (5) and their grandson Henry Hill (5), (born in London)

1871: James (62), a Labourer, Susannah (69), a Laundress, Martha (22), a Laundress, Joseph (19), Edmund (15) (recorded as Edward) and Henry (14) (now recorded as son), all Labourers.

1881: James (71), now bedridden, Susannah (70) and Henry (25), a Plasterer (now married).

James died aged 77, on the 30th October, 1887 (cause of death, Rheumatic Gout). He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd November.

Susannah after James died:

The 1891 census records Susannah (81) living at 4, Shrewsbury Terrace, Enborne Road, Newbury, with her married son Edmund (36), (recorded as Edward) a Bricklayer, her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, (35) and her grandchildren, Christopher (11), Charles (8), Edward (6), Ada (3) and Joseph (1).

Susannah died aged 82, on the 30th March 1892 (cause of death, cerebral apoplexy (stroke) she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th April.
