Jamms Powers was born circa 1810 in Newbury. James married Maria Sayers on 5 August 1832 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Maria was born circa 1811 in London.

 

In the 1841 census James and Maria were recorded living in Trafalgar Place, off Bartholomew Street in Newbury with James a bricklayer. Ten years later in the 1851 census James and Maria were recorded living in Speen, with James still a bricklayer.

 

James died on 15 October 1858 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 October. He left a will and probate was granted on 10 December 1858 at Oxford to his widow Maria, the value of the estate was under £100.

 

An announcement appeared in the Reading Mercury of 23 October 1858 as below.

 

On the 15th. inst., at Newbury, Mr. James Powers, builder, aged 48, much respected by all who knew him.

 

Maria remarried on 21 March 1863 at St John in Newbury to Charles Phillips. She died on 22 November 1891 at Bartholomew Street aged 79 and she was buried on 25 November at Newtown Road Cemetery.
