Paul Phillips (1770 – 1861)

                                    Ann Phillips (1780 – 1856)

Paul was born in Hampshire. He was baptized at All Saints in Monk Sherborne on 1 April 1770 and was the son of Philip and Anne (nee Browne) who were married at All Saints in Monk Sherborne on the 12 November 1757. Philip and Anne also had the following children.

Philip baptized on 1 April 1760 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne. Married Mary Sumner on 15 May 1780 at St Peter, Brimpton, he was recorded as a tailor of Preston Candover. Buried 2 January 1819 at St Mary, Kingsclere aged 58.

Mary baptized 21 March 1762 at All Sanits, Monk Sherborne.

Tabitha baptized 10 March 1765 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne. Married Abraham Pendery on 4 February 1788 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne. Died 3 March 1850 and buried 10 March at St Peter, Woolhampton.

George baptized 19 April 1767 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne.

Paul baptized on 1 April 1770 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne.

David baptized 5 May 1776 at All Saints, Monk Sherborne. Married Elizabeth Madden on 27 May 1802 at St Anne in Soho. Buried 26 September 1852 at St Leonard in Streatham.

By 1798 Paul was living in Greenham. He married Ann Kinslough on 2 September 1798 at St Mary in Thatcham. They had two children both baptized at St Nicolas in Newbury, Betsy on 13 September 1801 and Charlotte on 21 June, but unfortunately no year recorded. Ann died in April 1806 and she was buried at St Nicolas in Newbury on 9 April, the burial register recorded she died of recline. Paul remarried on 28 July 1806 at St Mary in Thatcham to Ann Waldron, both were recorded as being resident of Greenham. Ann was baptized on 1 October 1780 at St Michael in Lambourn, the daughter of Jane Waldron of Upper Lambourn.

In all census records Paul was recorded as a tailor.

The 1815 census of Newbury records the family living at James Kimbers (East side of Bartholomew Street), Newbury. The family were recorded as Paul (44), Ann (35), Charlotte (16), Charles (8), Ann (6) and Henry (3).

The 1841 census records Paul living in Bartholomew Street with Ann (55), Ann (25) and Alfred (15).

In 1851 Paul (82), Ann (71, born Lambourn, Berkshire) and their daughter Ann (42) living in Dibley’s Yard in Newbury.

Ann died on 22 July 1856 at Dibley’s Yard in Bartholomew Street. She was buried on 25 July 1856 at Newtown Road Cemetery.

The 1861 census records Paul as a widower aged 92 living in Dibley’s Yard in Newbury.

Paul died aged 92 in December 1861, he was laid to rest in Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 December.

Two sons of Paul and Ann were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery, Charles on 13 January 1897 and Alfred on 30 December 1864.
