Alfred Phillips (1821 – 1864)

                                    Elizabeth Phillips (1818 – 1890)

Alfred Phillips was baptized on 1 July 1821 at St Nicolas in Newbury, the son of Paul and Ann. His father was recorded as a tailor. In the 1841 census Alfred was recorded with his parents and sister Ann in Bartholomew Street in Newbury. Alfred had no occupation recorded while his father Paul was a tailor.

Alfred married Elizabeth Alexander on 6 June 1842 at St Nicolas in Newbury. Alfred was recorded as a tailor in the marriage record. Elizabeth was born circa 1818 in Hungerford. In the marriage record her father was recorded as George Alexander, a bricklayer and her occupation was a servant. In the 1841 census Elizabeth was recorded living as a servant with John Kimber and his family in Bartholomew Street in Newbury.

In the 1851 census Alfred and Elizabeth were recorded living at Crown Court in Newbury with daughters Elizabeth, Ann, Alice, Emma, Mary and Ellen and Alfred was a tailor. Ten years later in the 1861 census Alfred and Elizabeth were recorded living in a public house in Bartholomew Street in Newbury with six daughters. Alfred was a tailor and a publican.

Alfred died on 24 December 1864 aged 43 at the Albion Inn in Bartholomew Street in Newbury and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 30 December. An announcement appeared in the Reading Mercury dated 31 December 1864 as below.

On the 24th inst., at the “Albion” Inn, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, after a long and painful illness, Alfred Phillips, aged 43, leaving a widow and ten daughters.

A few years later in the 1871 census Elizabeth was recorded living in London Road in Speen along with her daughters Georgina, Louisa Matilda and Maria. Elizabeth was a tailoress. Elizabeth was still living in Speen in the 1881 census along with her daughter Louisa Matilda and grand-daughter Mary and she was still working as a tailoress.

Elizabeth died on 22 January 1890 aged 72 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 25 January. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 30 January 1890 as below.

PHILLIPS – Jan. 22, at Jack Street, Newbury, Elizabeth, widow of the later Alfred Phillips, aged 72.

Alfred’s parents Paul and Ann were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 December 1861 and 25 July 1856 respectively.
