James was born in Kingston Bagpuize, Berkshire, the son of John and Ann Stone (nee Franklin) who were married on the 12thNovember 1834, at St Giles, Oxford.
James’ father John was c1805, in Kingston, Berkshire, the son of John Stone.
James’ mother Ann was baptised in 1813, in Marcham, Berkshire, the daughter of Jane Franklin.

In 1841 James (4) was living in the hamlet of Drayton Moor, Kingston Bagpuize, with his father John (35), a Carrier, his brothers, Thomas (6) and William (2 months), his sister Martha (2) and a William Stone (70), an Agricultural Labourer.
The 1851 census records John (46), a Farmer, Ann (38), Thomas (15), James (14), both working on the Farm, Martha (12), William (10), Elizabeth (8), John (6), Emma (3), Paul (10 months) and John’s father William (83), a Retired Farmer, living in Draycott Moor, Berkshire.
By 1861 James (23) was working as a Gardener, lodging at 3 Knapp’s Cottages, Acton, Middlesex.

In 1891 James (53), a Domestic Gardener, Sarah (53) and Rose (16), a Milliner, were recorded living at 89 Brunswick Street, Reading
In 1901 James (63), a Domestic Gardener and Sarah (63), were living at 22 Chester Street, Reading, Berkshire
James was widowed in 1910. Sarah died aged 72, on the 24thFebruary (abode at time of death, Windmill Road, Mortimer). She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28thFebruary.
In 1911 James (73) was living at 68 Gloucester Road, Newbury, with his married daughter Rose Kendrick (36), (Martha Rose) his son-in-law, Alfred Kendrick (49), an Outfitter’s Shop Manager and their children, Ruth (12), Phillip (11) and Grace (6).
James continued to live at 68 Gloucester Road until he died aged 83, on the 26thFebruary 1921. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his wife Sarah, on the 2ndMarch.
