Elsie Jane Stone
1882-1883
Elsie Jane was born in Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 22ndJanuary 1883, at St Peter, Devizes, the daughter of John Thomas (of Wiltshire Constabulary) and Jane Gilbert Stone of Bath Road, Devizes.
Elsie died aged 7 months, on the 30thMay 1883, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2ndJune.

Elsie’s father John Thomas Stone was baptised on the 12thAugust 1860, the son of John (a Miller) and Dinah Stone (nee Romain) who were married on the 30thOctober 1858, in Urchfont, Wiltshire.
Her mother Jane Gilbert Pinchin was born on the 6thApril 1860. She was baptised on the 17thMay 1860, in Upavon, Wiltshire, the daughter of Robert Gilbert (a Labourer) and Sarah Pinchin (nee Farmer) who were married on the 23rdDecember 1856, in Upavon.

The 1881 census records Elsie’s father John Thomas (20) as a Journeyman Miller. By November 1881 he was working as a Policeman.

Elsie’s father John Thomas died of consumption, aged 25, on the 31stMay 1886, in Manninford Bruce, Wiltshire
In 1891 Jane (31) was working as a Domestic Servant (maid) at Park House, Christchurch, Hampshire. Her daughter Sarah (4) was living with her grandparents Robert and Sarah Pinchin, in Rushall, Wiltshire. Her daughter Elsie Annie (6) was living in Clayton House Orphanage Home, East Street, Epsom, Surrey.
In 1901 Jane (40) was working as a Parlour Maid, in Owl’s Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire.
In 1911 Jane (50) and her daughter Sarah (24) were recorded living at “Fathers” Cottage, Waters Green, Brockenhurst, Hampshire, with Jane’s married daughter Elsie Annie Young (26) and her husband Herbert John Young (28), a Postman.
The 1921 census records Jane (61) as an Invalid, living with her married daughter Sarah Jane Shurmer (35) and her family, at Clarte Villa Orle Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
The 1939 Register records Jane, living with her daughter Sarah Jane Shurmer and her family, at 28 Shrivenham Road, Swindon, Wiltshire.
Jane died aged 91, in 1951, in Swindon.
