Walford, his parents, siblings and early life:

Walford was born in Great Bentley, Essex, the son of William and Susannah Poulton (nee Mountford) who were married on the 24thDecember 1830, at Maldon, All Saints and St Peter, Essex.

Walford’s mother Susannah was baptised on the 15thMay 1808, at St Michael the Archangel, Great Sampford, Essex, the daughter of James and Mary Mountford (nee Willett) who were married on the 19thDecember 1799, in Great Sampford. Susannah died aged 36, in 1847, she was buried on the 19thJanuary, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley.

Walford’s father William was baptised on the 23rdJune 1808, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Leighs, Essex, the son of William and Mary Poulton (nee Helen/Helan/Helem) who were married on the 25thMay 1802, in Great Leighs. Walford’s father remarried in 1852, his 2nd wife was Mary Burling. (marriage registered in the March quarter, in Tendring) They had a daughter Elizabeth Ann, born in 1852 in Great Horkesley, Essex. William was widowed again in 1857, Mary died aged 42 (death registered in Maldon, Essex.) In 1861 William (52), a Servant, was lodging with a Thomas Dines and his family, in Great Bentley, Essex. In 1871 William (63) was recorded living in Lambourne, Essex, with his children, Joseph (29), a Grocer’s Assistant and Elizabeth Ann (18), a Milliner. By 1876 William was living in Newbury, Berkshire. He died aged 69, in 1876 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7thDecember.

Walford’s siblings were:

Mountford, baptised 23rd October 1831, at St Andrew, Weeley, Essex

William James, baptised 14th October 1832, at St Andrew, Weeley

Emma, baptised 9th March 1834, at St Andrew, Weeley

Elizabeth, baptised 26th July 1835, at St Andrew, Weeley (died age 2, buried 21st Oct. 1837, in Great Bentley)

Robert, born c1838, in Great Bentley

Joseph, born 1842, in Great Bentley

In 1841 William (30), a Baker, Susannah (30), Mountford (9), James (8), Robert (3) and Walford (1), were recorded living in Great Bentley, Essex.

The 1851 census records William (42), as a Carrier, employing 1 man, living in Plough Road, Great Bentley, with his sons, Mountford (19), a School Master, Walford (10) and Joseph (8).

No record found in the 1861 census for Walford.

 

Walford in later life:

Walford married Azubah Ann Smee in 1870, in Chelsea.

(Azubah Ann was born on the 13thAugust 1836, She was baptised on the 9thOctober 1836, at Little Waltham, Independent, Essex, the daughter of Alfred and Rebecca Smee (nee Lyndsell) who were married on the 20thJuly 1819, at St Martin, Little Waltham, Essex)

Walford and Azubah had the following children:

Annie Kathleen, born 1870 (died of croup aged 4 years 4 months, on the 3rdMarch 1875. Death registered as Annie Cathleen. Buried in the NRC, on the 6thMarch, as Annie Catherine)

The 1871 census records Walford (30), a Grocer’s Assistant & Teacher, Azubah (34) and their daughter Annie Kathleen (0), living in Woodspeen, Berkshire.

By 1881 the family were living in Greenham Street, Greenham, Berkshire as follows: Walford (40), a Grocer Partner, Azubah (44) a Dressmaker employing four assistants, Walford (9), Azubah (7), Mountford (5) and Florence (2).

The 1891 census records Walford (50) as a Grocer’s Traveller, living at 56, Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Azubah (54), a Dressmaker, Walford (19), a Grocer’s Assistant, Azubah (17), Mountford (15), a Solicitor’s Clerk and Florence (12).

In 1901, Walford (60) was recorded as a Butcher Shopkeeper, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury, with Azubah (63), a Dressmaker, Mountford (25) a Draper’s Assistant and Azubah (27) and Florence (22), both Dressmakers.

Walford was widowed in 1908. Azubah Annie died aged 72, on the 26thApril, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30thApril.

The 1911 census records Walford (70), living at 26, Craven Street, Newbury, with his children, Azubah Madeline (36) a Dressmaker, Mountford Archer (35), a Draper’s Assistant and Florence Kathleen (32), a Grocer’s Clerk.

Walford (81) and his children, Walford James (49), a Grocer’s Manager and Florence Kathleen (42), a Grocer’s Clerk, were still living at 26, Craven Street, in 1921. Both children were working for a Grocer, Brice Gould, at 37, Bartholomew Street.

Walford died aged 90, on the 31stDecember 1930, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rdJanuary 1931.
