Jane, her parents, siblings and early life:

Jane was baptised on the 21stJuly 1833 at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John (an Ostler) and Ann Holley (nee Pinfold) who were married on the 7thAugust 1815, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Jane’s father John was baptised on the 5th August 1792, in Kingsclere Hampshire, the son of John and Sarah Holley (nee Taylor) who were married on the 12th October 1791, in Kingsclere (John’s surname was recorded as Holey, on marriage record) John died aged 63, in 1852, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7th May.

Jane’s mother Ann was baptised on the 11thJuly 1790, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of William and Mary Pinfold (nee Lidiard) who were married on the 24thDecember 1783, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. Ann Holly died aged 73 in 1860, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15thAugust.

In May 1815 Jane’s parents, Ann Pinfold (22) and John Holly (22) were recorded as Servants at the 3 Tuns Inn, on the east side of Market Place, Newbury, Berkshire. They were married on the 7thAugust 1815, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.

John and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church, Newbury:

Sarah, 25th December 1816 (died aged 2, buried 8th May 1819, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Mary Ann, 25th December 1818

William, 16th February 1821             

John, 2nd May 1823 (died aged 1, buried on the 29thMay 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Emma Jane, 15th May 1826

Henry, 29th June 1828 (surname recorded as Holly)

Amelia, 25th December 1830

(Father recorded as an Ostler on all the baptism records except Amelia’s in 1830, which records him as a Labourer)

In 1841 Jane (7) was recorded living in Back Lane, Newbury, with her mother Ann (50), her siblings William (20), Henry (13), Amelia (10) and a Mary Rolfe (20). He father John (55) was recorded at the 3 Tuns Inn, Market Place, Newbury.

 

 

Jane in later life:

In 1851 Jane Holly (17) (Holley) was recorded as a Servant, living with her brother William (30) an Innkeeper and her nephew John (2), in Andover Road, Newbury.

Her future husband William Plumb (29) was recorded living with James Cope (44) and his wife Sophia (41), in Wash Common, Newbury, Berkshire. James Cope was recorded as a Publican and Blacksmith, William was recorded as a Servant (Blacksmith)

(William was baptised on the 24thMay 1822, at St Peter and St Paul, Marlborough, Wiltshire, the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Plumb. (Reputed father, Richard Holloway)

William and Jane had the following three daughters, baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Amelia, 24th February 1856

Emma Jane, 28th November 1857 (died in 1858, buried in the NRC on the 14thMay)

Ann Elizabeth, 15th January 1860 (born 1859)

They also had the following two children:

Jane, born c1863 (no baptism found)

William John, born 1874 (no baptism found)

 

The 1861 census records William (37), a Gardener, living in Old Road, Newbury, with Jane (27) and their daughters, Amelia (5) and Ann Eliz. (1)

The 1871 census records William (48), a Gardener, Jane (38), Amelia (15), Annie (11) and Jane (8), living in Old Road, Newbury (surname recorded as Plumbo on ancestry)

In 1881 William (59) a Gardener, Jane (49), Jane (19), a Servant, William (7) and two lodgers, were recorded living in West Mills, Newbury.

Jane was widowed in 1882. William died aged 61, on the 30thSeptember, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4thOctober 1882

In 1891 Jane (60), her son William (17), a Tinman and Whitesmith and her adopted son, Walter Sims (17), were recorded living at 3 Elm Lea Cottages, Old Newtown Road, Newbury

Jane died aged 63, on the 28thMarch 1893, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1stApril.
