Mary Jane, her parents, siblings and early life:

Mary Jane Buxey was born c1866, in Newbury, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Buxey (nee Bridgeman) who were married in 1860, in Inkpen, Berkshire.

Her father Joseph was baptised in 1837, in Inkpen, Berkshire, the son of William and Jane Buxey (nee Faithfull) who were married in 1825 in Kintbury, Berkshire.

Mary Jane’s mother Elizabeth was baptised Elizabeth Ann, in 1828, in Bovey Tracey, Devon, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Bridgeman. Elizabeth died aged 77, in 1906. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th October.

Joseph and Elizabeth also had the following children:

Reuben, baptised in 1861, in Inkpen

Maurice, baptised in 1863, in Inkpen

Sampson George, born in 1869 (died aged 5 weeks, buried in the NRC on the 24th December)

In 1861 Joseph (25), an Agricultural Labourer and Elizabeth (30), were living in Upper Green, Inkpen.

By 1871 Joseph (30) was working as a Drayman, living at 18 Jack Street, Newbury, with Elizabeth (36), Reuben (9) Morris (7) (Maurice) and Mary (5).

The 1881 census records Mary Jane (16) as a General Servant. She was still at 18 Jack Street, with her father Joseph (47), a Brewer’s Labourer, her mother Elizabeth (54) and her brother Reuben (19), a Brewer’s Labourer.

Mary’s father Joseph died aged 43, in October 1881. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 October.

Bride: Mary Jane Buxey, aged 19, spinster, of this parish

Fathers: Henry Tucker, a Miller and Joseph Buxey, a Brewer

Witnesses: Amy Buxey and Maurice Buxey

(John Charles was born in 1866, in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Hannah Tucker (nee Wernham) who were married in 1861 (marriage registered in Wantage)

John and Mary Jane had the following two daughters:

Florence Mary, born in 1886, baptised 2nd January 1887, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Baker, abode, Greenham)

Agnes Kate, born in 1889, baptised 9th July 1889, at St Nicolas, Newbury, (dad a Baker, abode, Marsh Street, Newbury)

Their daughter Agnes Kate died aged 1 in 1890. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th November.

In 1891 John (24) was working as a Baker, living at 35 Marsh Street, Newbury, with Mary (25), a Dressmaker and their daughter Florence (4).

Mary Jane died aged 26, of cirrhosis of the liver and exhaustion, on the 5th April 1892. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th April.

Bride: Kathleen Florence Bray Thomson, aged 22, spinster, abode, 12 Manilla Crescent, Weston Super Mare

Fathers: Henry Tucker, a Corn Porter and Jacob Thomson, a Sawyer

Witnesses: Maria Bray and Agnes Dorothy Tucker

John and Kathleen had the following children:

Henry Victor, born 19th June 1897, in Wantage, Berkshire.

Geoffrey Braybrooke, born 6th October 1902, baptised 23rd November 1902, at St Peter, Brighton, Sussex

Kathleen Charlotte Irene, born 22nd September 1907, baptised 1st December 1907 at St Peter, Brighton, Sussex

A stillborn son born 1910, laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th June.

The 1901 census records John (34), a Baker & Shopkeeper, Kathleen (30), Florence (14) and Henry Victor (3), living at 83 Trafalgar Street, Brighton, Sussex

By 1911 John (44), a Baker & Confectioner, Kathleen (38), Henry (13), Geoffrey (8) and Kathleen (3), were living at 9 Berkeley Road Westfields, Newbury, Berkshire. Also record in the household were two boarders.

John was widowed again in 1918, Kathleen died aged 46, on the 7th November. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th November. (Abode at time of death, 2 Bartholomew Terrace, Newbury)

The 1921 census records John (54) as a Baker and Confectioner, living at 2 Bartholomew Terrace, Newbury with his children, Henry (42), who was out of work and Kathleen (13).

John Charles died aged 61 on the 19th October 1927, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with his 2nd wife Kathleen Florence, on the 22nd October (Abode at time of death, 15 Pound Street, Newbury).
