Emily was born 25 August 1845 at Greenham. Q3 1845 Newbury 6 222 & baptised on 14 September 1845 at Newtown, Hampshire.

Her parents were Richard & Caroline (nee Richardson) Mathews.

 

Emily’s father died in 1847 & her mother, Caroline, married John Holder.

 

In 1851 they were living on Greenham Common. Emily is 6 & recorded as Holder. Her sister Elizabeth is 7 & step-sister, Sarah, 1. John Holder is 28 & an Agricultural labourer. Caroline is 28.

 

They are still on Greenham Common with her mother & step-father, both aged 38. Emily has been recorded as Sarah E, 15. There are 4 more step-siblings: William, 9; Eliza, 7; Hannah, 5 & Amy, 3.

 

In 1871 Emily (& her original surname Mathews) is 25 & a Kitchen maid at Elcot Lodge, Kintbury. It is owned by Helen Shelley & her sister Margaret who were both in their 70s & unmarried.

 

Emily marries Joseph Walker (Ref: 6053) in Q4 1871 Newbury 2c 471.

 

In 1881 they are living at 1, Falkland Terrace, Andover Road, Newbury. They are both 35 & Joseph continues to be a Boot maker. They have 5 children:

Annie, 7; Joseph, 6; Louise, 5; William, 3 & Alice, 2.

 

They had another son in 1882, Frederick Ernest (Ref: 4638) but he sadly died in 1883.

 

In 1891 the family are living at 24, Cheap Street, Newbury. Joseph & Emily are 45 & their son, Joseph H, 16, is now an Apprentice Bootmaker. Annie, 17, is a Kitchenmaid; William, 13 & Alice, 12.

 

1901 sees them at 1, Highgate Villas, Queen’s Road, Newbury.  Joseph, 54, is now recorded as a Bootmaker & a Shopkeeper. Emily is 54 with Joseph, 26, & Alice, 22, being Bootmaker’s assistants. Her husband, Joseph, dies in 1905.

 

In 1911 Emily is 65 & a widow, living on her own at 1, St John Villa Cottages, Greenham Road, Newbury.

 

She dies Q3 1917 Newbury 2c 233 & is buried at NRC on 4 July 1917.
