Susannah Newth

Susannah Barrat was baptised on the 8^th August 1802, in Hilperton, near Trowbridge, Wiltshire, the daughter of James and Ann Barrett (nee Longstreet) who were married on the 24^th December 1801, at St James, Trowbridge.

James and Ann also had the following children in Trowbridge, Wiltshire:

Mary Ann Barratt, 1^st September 1805, at St James with St Stephen, Trowbridge

Jeremiah George Barrett, 6^th August 1809, at St James with St Stephen, Trowbridge

William Jonah Barratt, 13^th January 1811, at St James with St Stephen, Trowbridge

Moses Arron Barret, 18^th April 1813, in Hilperton (dad recorded as a Weaver)

Matthew Barret, 20^th November 1814, in Hilperton (dad recorded as a Weaver)

Susanna Barrett married John Newth on the 23^rd October 1820, at St James with St Stephen, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.

(John Newth was baptised on the 4^th June 1797, in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Newth, (nee Jackson) who were married on the 10^th January 1791, in Wootton Bassett).

John and Susanna had the following three sons:

William, baptised 17^th February 1822, in Hilperton (abode: Hilperton, father a bargeman) (died aged 9 years 10 months, buried 11^th December 1831, in Hilperton).

Richard, baptised 14^th August 1824, in Hilperton (abode: Staverton, Trowbridge, father a Bargeman)

John, baptised 25^th December 1827, in Hilperton (abode: Staverton, father a Bargeman)

The 1841 census records Susannah (35) as a Weaver, living in Hilperton, with her sons, Richard (15), a Carpenter’s Apprentice and John (13).

By 1858 John and Sarah were living in Newbury, Berkshire. Susannah was widowed in this year. John died aged 61, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th August.

In 1861 Susannah (57) was recorded as a Nurse, living at 5, King John’s Almshouses, Newbury, Berkshire, with Mary Church (75) and Ann Church (82).

The 1871 census also records Susannah (66) as a Nurse. She was living at 8 Staple’s Yard, Newbury with two lodgers, George Fisher (26) and Edwin Trodd (20)

THREATINING LANGUAGE – Harry Hill, omnibus conductor was summoned, on the information of Susannah Newth, for having threatened to kill her, on the 24^th ult. Mr. C. Lucas appeared for the defence. Complainant, an elderly widow, living in Staple’s Yard, deposed, that on Saturday night, 24^th ult., the defendant rushed into her house and holding up his fists, threatened to kill her for having said something respecting his wife. She “drove him out with her tongs.” In cross-examination, the complainant said a quarrel had taken place between her and the defendant’s wife. The Magistrates considered that complainant had used very improper language towards Mrs. Hill, and dismissed the case.

In 1881 Susanna (78), was living in Northbrook Place, Newbury. Also recorded in the household was a lodger, Ann Brides (50), a Dressmaker. (Surname recorded as Nuth on ancestry)

Susannah Newth died aged 80, on the 24^th September 1882, in the Newbury Workhouse, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27^th September.
