Edwin his parents, siblings and early life:

Edwin was born on the 4th February 1868, in Stockcross, Berkshire, the son of George and Ann Perris (nee Carter) who were married in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury)

Edwin’s father George was born c1835 in Boxford/Stockcross area of Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Perris (nee Bayley/Bailey) who were married on the 12th August 1822, in Hungerford, Berkshire.

His mother Ann Carter was born c1836, in Marlborough Wiltshire. Ann gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Ellen, born in 1857, in Newbury. Ellen was baptised on the 21st February 1857, at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

George and Ann also had the following children:

The 1861 census records George (24), an Agricultural Labourer, Ann (22), Ellen Carter (4) and Mary Ann (1), living in the City, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1871 George (35), a Labourer and Hawker, Ann (35), Ellen (14), Mary Ann (11), George (8), Edwin (3), Albert (1) and a widow, Elizabeth Brooker (40) (recorded as sister), were recorded living in Stockcross Village, Berkshire.

Edwin’s mother Ann died aged 42, in 1879 (death registered in the March quarter, in Newbury)

His father Geroge remarried in 1879 (marriage registered in the September quarter, in Newbury). His 2nd wife was a widow, Ann Soper (nee Eady/Adey).

(Ann Adey was born c1842 in East Woodhay, Hampshire. She was baptised as Mary Ann on the 10th April 1842, in East Woodhay, the daughter of Robert and Mary Eady (nee Aubrey) who were married in1827 in East Woodhay, Hampshire. She married Henry Soper in 1873. They had two sons, Richard, born 1874 and George, born c1877. (Marriage and births registered in Kingsclere)

George and Ann had a son Henry Thomas, born in 1880, in Newbury.

The 1881 census records Edwin (13), a General Labourer, living in Stockcross, with his father George (48), a General Labourer, his stepmother Ann (41), his borthers Albert (11), Charles (9), His step brothers Richard (6), George (4) and his half-brother Henry, aged 9 months. (Richard and George’s surnames recorded as Perris)

In April 1887 Edwin (19), his brother Charles (15) (Charlie)and a Sydney Short, were charged with stealing wood from Goldwell Park. They were found guilty and fined.

Edwin in later life:

The 1891 census records Edwin (23) as a Miller, boarding in Pembroke Road, Newbury, Berkshire, with an Albert Bowley (28) and his family.

(Sarah Ann was born c1865, in Thatcham Berkshire, the daughter of George and Mary Bowley (nee Rolfe) who were married on the 24th May 1858, in Shalbourne, Wiltshire.)

They had the following children, baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Edwin George, born 16th May 1892, baptised 7th August 1892 (dad a Labourer, abode, Newbury)

Emily Kate, born 13th November 1900, baptised 27th January 1901 (dad a Porter, abode Westfields)

The 1901 census records Edwin (38) as a Grocer’s Carman, living at 2 Wellington Terrace, Russell Road, Newbury, with Sarah (30), Edwin George (8), Emily Kate (5 months) and Edwin’s widowed mother-in-law, Mary Bowley (68).

In 1911 the family were again recorded living at 2 Wellington Terrace, Edwin (43) was working as Bricklayer’s Labourer and Edwin George (18) was working as a Milkman.

In 1921 Edwin (53) was still working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer (employed by Newbury Borough Council). He was recorded living with Sarah (55), at 41 Russell Road, Newbury.

Sarah died aged 62 on the 8th February 1928, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th February.

The 1939 Register records Edwin as a Retired Builder’s Labourer. He was still living at 41 Russell Road, Newbury. Also in the household was his sister-in-law, Emily Kate Bowley.

Edwin died aged 73, in the Newbury District Hospital, on the 11th August 1941. He was laid to rest with Sarah Ann, on the 14th August.
