Joseph, his parents, siblings and early life:

Joseph was born in 1856, in Baydon, Wiltshire, the son of Joseph and Mary Leader (nee Rushen/Rushan/Rushon/Rushen) who were married on the 11th June 1851, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire.

His mother Mary was baptised on the 29th January 1827, in Wanborough, Wiltshire, the daughter of Job and Mary Rushen (nee Hall/Hott) who were married on the 16th December 1805, in Ogbourne St George, Wiltshire.

His father Joseph was baptised in 1825, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Harriet Leader (nee Wheatland) who were married on the 17th July 1824, at St Mary, Kintbury.

Joseph’s siblings were (all born in Wiltshire):

In 1861 Joseph (35), a Grocer and General Shopkeeper, Mary (34), Harriet (8), John (7), Joseph (4), Benjamin (2) and Mary (2 months), were living in Newbury Road, Baydon, Wiltshire.

In 1871 Joseph (45), a Grocer and Draper, Mary (44), Harriet (18), Joseph (14), Benjamin (12), Mary (10), Alfred (7), Thomas William (4) and Brice Barton (2), were living in the High Street, Baydon, Wiltshire.

Joseph in later life:

Joseph married Frances Hayward in 1878, in Wiltshire,

They had the following children (all born in Baydon):

The 1881 census records Joseph (24) as a Farmer of 10 acres, living in Baydon, Wiltshire, with Frances (26) and their son Ernest William (1).

Joseph (34), a Farmer, Frances (34) and their children, Ernest (11), Brice (10), Frances (8) and Alice (2), were still living in Baydon, Wiltshire in 1891.

Joseph was widowed in 1892, Frances died aged 37. She was buried on the 18th March, in Baydon, Wiltshire.

Joseph remarried in 1894 (marriage registered in the December quarter in Newbury) His 2nd wife was Emily Farr.

(Emily was born in 1865, in Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of Albert and Mary Farr (nee Allen) who were married on the 20th October 1864, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire).

Joseph and Emily had the following two daughters, born in Baydon: Phoebe Lilian, 1896 and Bertha Emily, 1898.

In 1901 Joseph (44), a Farmer and Emily (35), were living in Stockcross, Berkshire, with Ernest (20), Alice (12), Phoebe (4) and Bertha (2).

Their daughter Phoebe Lilian died aged 12, on the 14th September 1908, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September.

The 1911 census records Joseph (54), a Poultry Keeper, Emily (45) and their daughter Bertha Emily (12), living in Curridge Common, Newbury.

The 1921 census records all three living at Lanolee Farm, Curridge, Berkshire. (It is rumoured (no substantial evidence) that Oliver Cromwell stayed at what is now Lanolee Farm during the Second Battle of Newbury in 1644).

Joseph died aged 72, on the 20th December 1928, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his daughter Phoebe Lilian, on the 24th December. At the time of his death Joseph was living at the Cottage Cow House Farm, North Sydmonton, Hampshire.

Emily after Joseph’s death:

By 1930 Emily was living at 21 St John’s Road, Newbury, her sister Alice was living with her.

Emily’s sister Alice, died in 1935, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th April.

The 1937 Electoral Register records Emily living alone at 21 St John’s Road, Newbury.

Emily died aged 71 on the 6th June 1937. At the time of her death Emily was living with her married daughter Bertha Emily Hinder, and her family, in Kingsmill Road, Swindon. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th June, Joseph and their daughter Phoebe Lilian.
