Unnamed Payne (1868 – 1868)

According to the Newtown Road burial accounts the mother of the stillborn child buried in 1868 was Ellen Payne. The only Ellen Payne recorded living in Newbury in the 1861 or 1871 censuses was one living as a servant in Cheap Street in Newbury in the 1861 census. She was recorded as being 14 years old, a nursemaid, unmarried and born in Newbury. However, there was no birth recorded in Newbury in 1846/7 of an Ellen Payn but there was a birth of an Eleanor Payne recorded in Newbury in 1846. There is no other trace of Eleanor in the 1861 census, she was not living with her parents, so it seems very likely that Eleanor used the name Ellen and she was the Ellen recorded in the 1861 census.

A stillborn child of Ellen was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 April 1868.

Eleanor Payne was born in Newbury in 1846 the daughter of Benjamin and Harriet, nee Allen, Payne. She married (as Eleanor) Henry Copas on 17 April 1870 at St John the Evangelist in Newbury. Eleanor and Henry continued to live in Newbury. They were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 15 January 1900 and 2 June 1923 respectively (there are separate biographies for Eleanor and Henry on the website).
