James Payne (1850 – 1883)

James Payne was born in 1850 in Metton in Norfolk, the son of Thomas and Margaret, nee Causton, Payne. He was baptized on 24 November 1850 at St Andrew in Metton, his father Thomas was a carpenter. In the 1851 census James was recorded living with his parents in Metton, Thomas was recorded as a carpenter.

James’s mother Margaret died in February 1856 aged 39 and she was buried on 6 February at St Margaret in Felbrigg (near Cromer).

In the 1861 census James was recorded living with his father Thomas in Hampstead Norris, Thomas’s occupation was journeyman carpenter.

Ten years later in the 1871 census James was recorded living as a servant in Beenham House in Speen, his occupation was usher. Then in the 1881 census he was recorded as a servant at the Manor House, Wood Eaton in Oxfordshire and was an under butler.

James died on 29 September 1883 aged 32 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 2 October.

An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 11 October as below.  

PAYNE – Sept. 29, at Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, after a long and painful illness, James Payne, aged 32.

James’s father Thomas moved to Boxford, he remarried and was buried at St Andrew in Boxford on 24 July 1899.
