Eliza Rowell

Eliza, her parents, siblings and early life:
Eliza was baptised on the 25th July 1830, at St Mary, Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Parr (nee Showell) who were married on the 7th June 1824, in Thatcham, Berkshire.
Eliza’s father William was baptised on the 25th December 1795, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of William and Mary Parr (nee Witherell) who were married on the 25th May 1795, in Greenham, Berkshire.
Eliza’s mother Elizabeth was born on the 8th April 1798, she was baptised on the 20th May, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas and Frances Showell (nee Bayle) who were married on the 6th April 1789, in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.
Elizabeth Showell had an illegitimate son, William Parr, baptised on the 22nd July 1821, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury. (Father recorded as William Parr, an Ostler.)
William and Elizabeth also had the following children:
Frances Ann, baptised 27th January 1828, at St Mary, Greenham
Ellen, 25th June 1837, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Publican) (died aged 5 months, buried 10th Oct. at St Nicolas, Newbury)
Ellen, 1st September 1839, at St Nicolas, Newbury (dad a Publican)
In 1841 Eliza (10) was recorded living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her father William (40), a Publican, (The Royal Oak, Northbrook Steet) her mother Elizabeth (35), her sisters Fanny (13) (Frances Ann) and Ellen (2) and a Harriett Parr (13).
The 1851 census records Eliza (21), as a Dressmaker. She was living in St Mary Hill, Newbury with her father William (55), an Innkeeper, (The Weaver’s Arms) her mother Elizabeth (53), her married sister, Frances Ann Taylor (23), her nephew, George Taylor (2) and her niece, Elizabeth Taylor (1). Also recorded at the Inn were eight lodgers.
Eliza in later life:
Eliza married Frederick Rowell on the 31st July 1852, in Thatcham, Berkshire.
(Frederick was born on the 22nd October 1826, he was baptised on the 15th December, at St Nicolas, Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Rowell (nee Smith) who were married on the 2nd January 1819, in St Dunstan-in-the-West, London)
Frederick and Eliza had a son, Henry Robert, born in 1853, in Enborne, Berkshire.
Eliza’s father William died aged 58, on the 10th March 1854, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th March.
In 1858 Frederick was charged with using threatening language towards his mother-in-law, Mrs. Parr. He was bound over to keep the peace towards Elizabeth Parr on the 26th February.
By 1861 Frederick and Eliza were living separately.
The 1861 census records Eliza (30), a Dressmaker and her son Henry Robert (7) living in Westcombe Buildings, Northbrook Street, Newbury with her widowed mother Elizabeth Parr. Frederick (38) was lodging in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, he was still working as a Printer.
Frederick died aged 43, on the 10th July 1870, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th July, with his brother Henry (buried 1854).
The 1871 census records Eliza (40) as a Beerhouse Keeper at 60, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. He son Henry Robert (18) an Engine Fitter, was recorded living with her. Her mother Elizabeth (72) was recorded as a retired Publican. She was still living in Westcombe Buildings.
Eliza died aged 47, on the 11th June 1878, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th June.
Her mother Elizabeth died aged 82, on the 27th October 1878. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with her husband William, on the 30th October.
