Jane, her parents, siblings and early life:

Jane was baptised on the 10th November 1780, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of John and Martha Salter (nee Pierce/Peirce) who were married on the 26th May 1777, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Jane’s mother Martha Peirce was born c 1756. Martha died aged 39 in 1795, she was buried on the 2nd June, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

John Salter was born c1755. John remarried on the 21st September 1801, at St Nicolas, Newbury. His 2nd wife was a widow, Elizabeth Biggs. In 1815 John (59) a Publican and Elizabeth (60) were living at the Catherine Wheel, Market Place, Newbury. John died in 1829, he was buried on the 23rd January, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

John and Martha also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

John, 13th October 1778

Thomas Peirce, 14th February 1783

Francis Peirce, 25th March 1787

Sarah, 19th June 1789

Joseph Peirce, 9th October 1791

Jane in later life:

Jane Salter gave birth to a daughter, Jane, born 12th April 1801. She was baptised 1st May (reputed father John Twitchin)

Jane married John Twitchin on the 16th July 1801, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

(John Twitchen was a Sawyer. He was baptised on the 16th August 1779, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of Richard and Ann Twitchen (nee Cumner) who were married on the on the 11th October 1778, at St Nicolas, Newbury).

John and Jane also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

Sarah, born 23rd December 1802, baptised 23rd January 1803

Benjamin, born 7th November 1807, baptised 9th December 1807

Joseph, born 14th January 1811, baptised 8th January 1812

Eliza, baptised 7th May 1815

Benjamin, 25th February 1818

Richard, baptised 15th July 1820

In 1815 Jane (35) and her daughter Eliza were recorded lodging at a lodging house in Red Lion Yard, on the west side of Northbrook Street, Newbury.

The 1841 census records Jane (60) as a Laundress, living in Newtown Road Newbury. (Surname recorded as Switchew on ancestry)

In 1851 Jane Twitching (74) was recorded lodging in Old Newtown Road, Newbury.

Jane died aged 81 in 1859, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd February.
