Sarah Ann Lovell

1841-1909

Sarah Ann, her parents, siblings and early life:

Sarah Ann was born in 1841, she was baptised on the 10^th October 1841, in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, the daughter of William (a Sawyer) and Lydia Hale.

Her parents William Hayle (a Labourer) and Lydia Chapman (a Lacemaker) were married on the 2^nd April 1840, in Silverstone.

Her mother Lydia was baptised on the 5^th March 1820, in Whittlebury, Northamptonshire, the daughter of Richard (a Labourer) and Elizabeth Chapman (nee Mayo) who were married on the 6^th August 1817 in Whittlebury and Silverstone, Northamptonshire. Lydia died aged 63 in 1880, she was buried on the 14^th December, at St Anne, Silverstone.

Sarah Ann’s father William was baptised on the 18^th January 1818 in Whittlebury and Silverstone, the son of John (a Labourer) and Elizabeth Hayle (nee Varney) who were married on the 14^th October 1811, in Wittlebury and Silverstone. William died aged 62 in 1878, he was buried on the 29^th January, at St Anne, Silverstone.

William and Lydia also had the following children:

Mary born 1844, baptised 15^th September 1844 (surname spelt Hale on baptism record)

Thomas born 1846, baptised 4^th October 1846 (surname spelt Hale on baptism record)

John born 1849, baptised 27^th May 1849

Elizabeth born 1852, baptised 25^th July 1852 (died aged 7 months, buried 29^th October 1852 in Silverstone)

Joseph born 1853, baptised 19^th February 1854

Elizabeth born 1857, baptised 2^nd August 1857

William born c1859, baptised 5^th June 1859

In 1851 Sarah (9) was recorded as a Lacemaker, living in Water Gate, Silverstone, with her grandparents, Richard Chapman (55), a Labourer, Elizabeth Chapman (52) a Lacemaker and her uncle, Joseph Chapman (33), a Woodman).

The 1861 census records Sarah Ann (19), a Lacemaker, living in West End, Silverstone, with her parents William (43), a Labourer, Lydia (42), a Lacemaker, her brothers, Thomas (14), a Plough Boy, John (11), Joseph (7), William (2) and a lodger.

Sarah’s parents continued to live in West End, Silverstone until they died.

(Simon was born in Silverstone, Northamptonshire. He was baptised as Simon Hollis, on the 28^th November 1841, in Silverstone, the son of William and Caroline Lovell (nee Hollis(s)) who were married on the 26^th December 1839, in Silverstone).

Simon and Sarah Ann had the following children (all baptised in Silverstone):

William Ernest born 1862, baptised as Ernest William, 15^th January 1863

John born 1864, baptised as John Charles, 6^th November 1864 (died aged 1 in 1865)

Charles, born 1866, baptised 6^th June 1869

Simon, born1869, baptised Frederick Simon, 6^th June 1869

Mary Elizabeth born 1871, baptised Mary Elizabeth Rose Ann, 5^th November 1871 (died aged 1 in 1872)

In 1871 Simon (29), an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (29), Ernest (8), Charles (4) and Frederick (2), were recorded living at 136 Cattle End Silverstone

In 1881 Simon (39) was working as a General Labourer, he was living in Morlands Cottages, Greenham, Berkshire, with Sarah (39), Ernest (18), a General Labourer, Charles (14), a General Labourer, Frederick (12), Mary Ann (7) and Ellen (3) (Caroline Ellen).

The 1891 census records Simon (49), a General Labourer, Sarah (49), Mary (17), a Laundress and Caroline (14), living in Barlow’s Buildings, Greenham, Berkshire.

In 1901 Simon (59) was working as a Carter for a Timber Dealer. He was living at 1 Kings Road, Newbury, (now known as Kings Road West) with Sarah (59), his son-in-law, William Loveridge (26) a Tractor Engine Driver, his daughter Caroline Loveridge (24), his grandson, William Loveridge (3) and his granddaughter Winifred Loveridge (1)

Simon died aged 65 on the 20^th April 1906. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th April. At the time of his death, he was living at 1 Charles Place, Newbury.

Sarah continued to live at 1 Charles Place, until her death. She died aged 67, on the 31^st January 1909 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4^th February.
