Kate Cutler

Kate, her parents, siblings and early life:
Kate was born in Newbury, Berkshire, she was baptised on the 10th July 1859, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth Taylor (nee Harris), who were married on the 6th March 1837, in Newtown, Hampshire.
Kate’s father Reuben was a Whitesmith. He was baptised on the 30th October 1808, at St Andrew, Boxford, Berkshire, the son of Moses and Amy Taylor (nee Harris) who were married in 1790, in Boxford.
Her mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 2nd June 1816, in Burghclere, Hampshire, the daughter of Thomas and Ann Maria Harris (nee Carter) who were married in 1811, in Hampshire.
Reuben and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Newbury:
Frederick, (born 23rd Jan.1838) baptised 25th February 1838
George, (born 1840) baptised 14th June 1840 (died aged 2, buried 25th August 1842, at St Nicolas, Newbury)
Elizabeth, (born 16th Feb. 1842), baptised 27th March 1842 (died aged 4 months, buried 6th July 1842, at St Nicolas, Newbury)
Jane, (born 20th Sept. 1843) 29th October 1843
Thomas, (born 25th Jan. 1847) baptised 28th March 1847
William, (born 15th Sept. 1850) baptised 27th October 1850
Elizabeth, baptised 28th November 1852 (died aged 8 months, buried 10th June 1853, at St Nicolas Newbury)

In 1841 Reuben (30), Elizabeth (25) and their sons, Frederick (3) and George (1), were living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.
The 1851 census records Reuben (38), Elizabeth (33), Frederick (13), Jane (6), Thomas (4) and William (6 months), living in Pleasant Place, Newbury.
Kate (2) was recorded living at 3 Pleasant Place Newbury, in 1861, with her father Reuben (49), her mother Elizabeth (48) and her brothers Thomas (13), Wiliam (10), George (5).
The family were also recorded living at 3 Pleasant Place in 1871. Living in the household were Reuben (60), Elizabeth (55), William (20), and Engine Fitter, George (15) an Engine Fitter Apprentice and Kate (12).
In 1881 Reuben (73) was living at 11 New Church Almshouses, Newbury. His granddaughter Elizabeth Clack (9) was recorded living with him. His wife Elizabeth (65) was working as a Laundress and was recorded living alone at 3 Pleasant Place.
Elizabeth died aged 66 in 1883, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th February.
Reuben died aged 75 on the 10th June 1884. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th June.

(Charles was born in 1854, he was baptised on the 28th May 1854 in North Hayling, Southampton, Hampshire, the son of William (a Carpenter) and Ellen Cutler (nee Rogers) who were married on the 3rd October 1839, in North Hayling)
The 1881 census records Charles (26), a Grocer and Draper and Kate (22) living at a Grocer’s Shop in Wokingham Road, Sonning, Berkshire.

Ernest Reginald born c1891, (baptised on the 26th January 1891, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Charles (a Traveller) and Kate Cutler, of The Retreat, Berkley Road, Newbury)
In 1891 Charles (36) was working as a Grocer’s Assistant, living at 2 Morecombe Villas, with Kate (32), Kate (9), Ernest (3 months) and a servant. (Surname recorded as Cutter on ancestry)
By 1901 Charles (46), Kate (41), Kate (19) and Reginald E. (10) were living at “The Prince of Wales Hotel” Didcot, Berkshire. Charles was the licensed victualler.
By 1911 Charles (56) was back working as a Grocer’s Assistant, living in Roker, Horseshoe Road, Pangbourne, Berkshire, with Kate (52) and their son, Ernest Reginald (20), a G.W.R. Railway Clerk
The 1921 census records Charles (67) now unemployed, Kate (62), their daughter-in-law, Matilda M. Cutler (32), their grandson, Ernest Charles (2) and three boarders, living in Horseshoe Road, Pangbourne.
Charles and Kate continued to live in Horseshoe Road Pangbourne until Kate’s death.
Kate died aged 71 in 1930 in Pangbourne. Her body was brought to Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December.
Charles died aged 79 in 1933, at 54 Broadwater Road, Worthing, Sussex, the home of his widowed daughter Kate Shacklock. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th December
