Frederick, his parents, siblings and early life:

Frederick was born in Greenham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 4th November 1838, at St Mary, Greenham, the son of John and Jemima Allen (nee Hobson) who were married on the 4th December 1837, in St Marylebone, Middlesex.

His father John was born in Crookham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 31st January 1813 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Antrim and Sarah Allen (nee Hazel) who were married on the 11th March 1806 in Thatcham, Berkshire.

His mother Jemima was baptised on the 26th January 1817, in Houghton, Hampshire, the daughter of Benjamin (a Carter) and Anne Hobson

John and Jemima also had the following children:

Mark, 1843 in Shottesbrook

Richard, 1843 in Shottesbrook

George, 1845 in Greenham

William, 1848 in Greenham

Eliza, 1854 in Greenham

 

In 1841 Frederick (3) and his parents John (25) an Agricultural Labourer and Jemima (20) were living in Shottesbrook, Berkshire. Also recorded on the same census page were Jemima’s father Benjamin Hobson (55), Eliza Hobson (15) and George Hobson (13).

The 1851 census records Frederick (12) working as an Agricultural Labourer at Pigeons Farm, Greenham, for farmer, William Hedges (75).

Bride: Charlotte Stratford, full age, spinster, abode, Highclere

Fathers: John Allen and Charles Stratford, both Labourers

Witnesses: Ann Bayman and Thomas Stratford

(Charlotte was born in Highclere Hampshire in 1840. She was baptised on the 22nd November 1840 in Highclere, the daughter of Charles and Rebecca Stratford (nee Aldridge) who were married on the 8th June 1833, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Charles was from Burghclere))

In 1871 Frederick (33) was working as a Carter/Agricultural Labourer, living in Enborne Oil Mills, Enborne, Berkshire, with Charlotte (30)

The 1881 census records Frederick (41) and Charlotte (40) living in Smith’s Buildings, Marsh Road, Newbury. Frederick was recorded as a Gardener.

The 1891 census records Frederick (52) as a Coachman, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury with Charlotte (50)

In 1901 Frederick (62) was working as a General Labourer, living at 77 Bartholomew Street, Newbury with Charlotte (60)

Frederick died aged 69 on the 16th February 1908. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20th February.

The 1911 census records Charlotte (70) living on her own means, at 47 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Charlotte died aged 79 in 1920. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd July.
