Emily Allen
1861-1940
Emily was born on the 13th April 1861, in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Emily Allen (nee Hearmon) who were married c1861 (marriage registered in the March quarter, 1861, in Newbury)
Emily’s father William was born on the 4th January 1828, he was baptised on the 10th February 1828, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of John (a Labourer) and Mary Allen (nee Andrews) of Bartholomew Street, Newbury. William died aged 79, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th January 1905.
Her mother Emily was born on the 28th June 1832, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 30th September 1832, at the Lower Meeting House, Independent, Newbury, the daughter of John and Mary Hearmon (nee Burgess) who were married in 1818, in Wallingford, Berkshire. Emily died aged 82 in 1915. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd February.

In 1861 (before Emily was born) her parents, William (35), a Journeyman Boot & Shoe Maker and Emily (28) a Dressmaker, were living in Jack Street, Newbury
The 1871 census records William (45) as a Journeyman Bootmaker, living in Jack Street, Newbury with Emily (38) a Dressmaker, Emily (9), Arthur (7), Mary Lousia (5) and William’s mother Mary Holmes (71).
The 1881 census records Emily (20) as a Milliner, employed by Edward Privett, a Linen Draper, boarding in The Square, Petersfield, Hampshire. Her father William (56), a Boot Seller, her mother Emily (48), a Milliner and Dressmaker, her brother Arthur (17), a Printer and Compositor’s Apprentice and her sister Mary (15), an Assistant Teacher, were now living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.
In 1891 Emily (28) was recorded as a Shopwoman/Milliner, working for a Draper and Justice of the Peace, Charles Monk (62), in Bell Street, Henley, Oxfordshire. Her father William (66), a Bootmaker, her mother Emily (59), a Dressmaker, her brother Arthur (27), a Printer’s Clerk, Arthur’s wife, Blanche (24), a Milliner and her sister Mary Louisa (24), a Governess, were still living in Northbrook Street, Newbury.
By 1901 Emily (39), a Milliner, was back living with her parents, William (76) and Emily (68) at 11 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.
After her father’s death in 1905, her mother was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse.
The 1911 census records Emily (49), as Companion to her mother, living at 3, Lower Raymond’s Almshouses, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. With her mother Emily (78) and her sister Mary Louisa (45), a Housekeeper.
In 1921 Emily (60) was living in Newbury Street, Lambourn, Berkshire. Also recorded living with her were Vernon Harold Wing (25), Letitia Wing (25) and Robert Vernon Charles Wing (1).
The 1939 Register records Emily living on her own means, at 73 St George’s Ave, Newbury, Berkshire
Emily died aged 78 on the 22nd February 1940, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th February.
