Elizabeth, her parents, siblings and early life:

Elizabeth Ellen (aka Ellen) was born on the 27th October 1855 in Crofton, Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 25th November 1855, in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, the daughter of Daniel and Jane Martin (nee Fribbence) who were married on the 16th December 1837, in Bedwyn Magna, Wiltshire.

Her father Daniel (a Labourer) was born in Wexcombe, Wiltshire, He was baptised on 2nd February 1817 in Great Bedwyn, the son of James and Sarah Martin (nee Hamblin) who were married on the 28th November 1803, in Great Bedwyn.

Her mother Jane was born on the 16th May 1815, she was baptised aged 5, on the 15th October 1820, in Great Bedwyn, the daughter of John and Hannah Fibbrence (nee Batt) who were married on the 22nd April 1802, in Great Bedwyn.

Elizabeth’s mother Jane, gave birth to an illegitimate son James Fribbence, who was baptised on the 23rd October 1836, in Great Bedwyn.

Daniel and Jane had the following children baptised in Great Bedwyn:

Eliza, born 6th January, baptised 31st January 1841

Harriett, born 7th January, baptised 8th January 1843

Charles, born 6th May, baptised 9th June 1844

George, born 9th May, baptised 11th June 1848

Sarah, born 25th November, baptised 22nd December 1850

William, born 27th September, baptised 16th October 1853

Daniel, born 14th February, baptised 17th March 1858

The 1861 census records Daniel (44) as a Carter, living in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, with Jane (44) and their children, James (24), an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah (11), William (7), Ellen (5) and William (3).

Elizabeth Ellen in later life:

In 1871 Ellen (18) was working as a Domestic Servant, at 3 Twickenham Place, Twickenham, Middlesex, for a Grocer, Charles Deayton (30).

Elizabeth had a daughter, Rose Elizabeth, born in 1879 in Twickenham Middlesex.

She married Henry John Allen in 1884 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Henry John was born on the 29th May 1859 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Mary Allen (nee Ba(t)chelor) who were married in 1855 (marriage registered in Newbury))

Henry John and Elizabeth Ellen had a daughter Mary Jane, born on the 18th January 1885, in Crofton, Wiltshire.

Elizabeth (35) and her two daughters Rose (11) and Mary (6) were recorded living in The Folly, Greenham in 1891. Her husband Henry (32) was recorded visiting his widowed mother Mary (53), his sister Eliza (25), a Dressmaker and his brother Thomas (22), in Cul de Sac Road, East Molesley, Epsom, Surrey.

In 1901 Elizabeth (43) and her daughter Mary (16), a Dressmaker, were again recorded living in The Folly, Greenham. Her husband Henry (42), a Painter, was boarding at Chestnut Villas, Long Ditton, Epsom, Surrey.

The 1911 census records Henry (51) as a House Painter, living in The Folly, Stroud Green, Newbury, with Elizabeth (54) and their daughter Mary (25), a Dressmaker.

The 1921 census records Henry (62) working as a Painter and Furniture Polisher, working for Elliotts, Moulding, Joinery and Furniture Manufacturing, in Albert Road, Northbrook Street, Newbury. He was living at 16 The Folly, Greenham with Elizabeth (65).

The 1939 Register records Henry as a retired Painter & French Polisher, he was again recorded living at 16 The Folly, Greenham with Elizabeth

Elizabeth was widowed the following year. Henry John died aged 81on the 28th July. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st July 1940.

By 1944 Elizabeth Ellen was living with her married daughter Mary Jane Davis and her husband Herbert Charles Davis, at 56 Greenham Road, Newbury.

Elizabeth Ellen died aged 89 on the 19th June 1944. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her husband Henry John on the 21st June. Their son-in-law Herbert Charles Davis and their daughter Mary Jane Davis were also buried with them. (Herbert’s remains after cremation, on the 6th February 1960 and Mary the 12th April 1973)
