Elizabeth, her parnets, siblings and early life:
Elizabeth was baptised on the 22nd January 1837, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Charles and Ann Allen (nee Barnes) who were married on the 27th November 1825, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
Her father Charles was a Carpenter. He was born on the 10th October 1802, in Newbury Berkshire and was baptised on the 31st October 1802, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Thomas and Mary Allen (nee Hazell) who were married on the 12th October 1797, at St Nicolas.
Her mother Ann was born c1801.
Charles and Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas:
Ann, 20th August 1829 (died aged 5 weeks, buried 16th September 1829m at St Nicolas)
Elizabeth, 8th March 1835 (died 1836)
Ann, 14th April 1839 (died aged 2, buried 4th May 1841, at St Nicolas)
Elizabeth’s mother Ann died aged 39 in 1840. She was buried on the 19th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury.
The 1841 census records Charles (35) and his daughter Elizabeth (4), living in Northbrook Street, Newbury. (Living next door was Mary Batten (30) and her parents, John and Charlotte Batten)
Her father remarried later that year. His 2nd wife was his next-door neighbour, Mary Ann Batten.
Mary gave birth to a daughter, Jennetta, in 1845. She was baptised on the 30th November 1845, at St Nicolas Church.
Elizabeth in later life:
The 1851 census records Elizabeth (14) as a Nurse Servant, living at 16 Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Charles Mather (33) a Grocer, his wife Mary (31), his daughter Annie (3 months), a visitor, Ann Lye (37), James Daniel (22) an Assistant, Alfred Bullock (16) an Apprentice, James Holdup (20) a Porter and Drusilla Moore (22) a Servant.
The 1861 census records Elizabeth (26) working as a Housemaid for Edward Blore, at 4 Manchester Square, St Marylebone London. She was again recorded working for Edward Blore in Manchester Square in 1871.
In 1881 Elizabeth (40) was working as a Matron, at Prospect Park House, (a boarding school) Tilehurst, Berkshire. The 1891 census again records her as a Matron at Park House, Tilehurst.
In 1901 Elizabeth (64) was living on her own means, boarding at 1 Sherwood Street, Reading, Berkshire.
The 1911 census also records Elizabeth (74) living on her own means, she was still boarding at 1 Sherwood Street.
Elizabeth died aged 77 on the 30th September 1914 in Reading. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd October, with her step-mother Mary Ann Allen (buried 1879) and her father Charles Allen (buried 1884)
