Charles was born in Greenham, Berkshire, the son illegitimate son of Elizabeth Allen.

His mother Elizabeth was born on the 7th July 1809. She was baptised on the 13th August 1809 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of Antrim and Sarah Allen (nee Hazel) who were married on the 11th March 1806, in Thatcham.

Elizabeth also had a daughter, Ellen, baptised on the 13th March 1831, in Thatcham, Berkshire.

Elizabeth married James Tidbury on the 8th August 1840, in Burghclere, Hampshire. 

(James was a Blacksmith. He was born deaf, on the 30th April 1807, in Greenham, Berkshire.  He was baptised on the 24th May 1807 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of James and Phebe Tidbury (nee Preston) who were married on the 5th June 1804, in Thatcham).

The 1841 census records Charles Allen (2), living in Crookham Common, Thatcham, Berkshire, with his step-father of James Tidbury (30) and his mother Elizabeth Tidbury (30). (Surname recorded as Sidbury on ancestry)

The 1851 census also records Charles Allen (12) living in Crookham. He was recorded working as an Agricultural Labourer, living with his step-father, James (43), his mother Elizabeth (41) and his half-siblings, James (9), Jane (6), Harriet (4) and William (1).

In 1861 Charles was recorded living in Stoud Green, Greenham, Berkshire, with his step-father James a Labouring Smith, his mother Elizabeth and his half-brothers James and William. 

Charles married Eliza Giles in 1864 (marriage registered in Newbury). They had a son, Charles James, born later that year. Charles James was baptised in Greenham, in 1864.

Charles was widowed in 1865, Eliza died aged 26, she was buried on the 5th April 1865, at St Mary, Greenham.

Charles was recorded as a Boiler Maker in 1871, 1881, 1891

He was recorded living in Smith’s Buildings, Stroud Green, Greenham in the 1871, 1881, 1891 census records

The household consisted of:

In 1871: Charles (33), Sarah (31), John (4), Alice (2), Ellen (1 month) and Sarah’s mother Sarah Brown (68)

In 1881:  Charles (42), Sarah (40), John (13), a Boiler Maker’s Apprentice, Alice (12), Ellen (10), Louisa (7), Frederick (3) and Arthur (7 months)

In 1891: Charles (52), Sarah (50), Alice (22), a Dressmaker, Louisa (17), a Laundress, Frederick (13) and Arthur (10)

Charles was widowed again in 1892. Sarah died aged 50. She was buried on the 9th January, at St Mary, Greenham

The 1901 census records Charles (62) as a Retired Boiler Maker, living at 2, Blue Ball Cottages, Greenham Road, Newbury, His sister-in-law- Sarah Elizabeth Spracklin (62), who was blind, was living with him.

Charles was also recorded living at 2 Blue Ball Cottages in 1911. In 1921 he was recorded living in Blue Ball Yard, Greenham Road. On both census records he was recorded as a Retired Iron Moulder. The 1921 census records his last employer as Plenty & Co, Engineers, Newbury.

In 1911 his sister Ellen Allen (80) was living with him as his Housekeeper. In 1921 Amelia Heath (46) was living with him, as a Servant.

He continued to live at 2 Blue Ball Cottages until his death in 1923. He died aged 85 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.
