According to a census, Eliza was born in Botley, Hampshire in c1807 but no record of her birth, early life or marriage have been found due to not knowing her maiden name.

 

1851 is the first known record of her. She is 43, a pauper & formerly a laundress living in Mills Yard near Cheap Street. She has two sons living with her: John, 18, Painter Journeyman & James, 17, a Porter.

They were both born in Greenham.

 

In 1854, Eliza was killed by William Appleton. There were very detailed accounts of the inquest published in both the Berkshire Chronicle & the Reading Mercury on Saturday 28 October 1854.

 

Eliza died on 21 October 1854 from “effusion of blood on the brain” according to the death certificate. She was buried at NRC on 27 October 1854.

 

Report of the Berkshire Lent Assizes below, where William Appleton was sentenced. He was 36, a widower & had 2 children & later moved from Newbury to East Woodhay.
