Jane, her parents, siblings and early life:

Jane was born in Westcot, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 26th June 1853, at Holy Cross Sparsholt, Berkshire, the daughter of Robert and Maria Haines (nee Hope) who were married on the 15th October 1842, in Sparsholt. (Maria was recorded as Anna Maria at the time of her marriage)

Her father Robert was born c1816 in Uffington, Berkshire. He died aged 81 in 1899 in Wantage Berkshire.

Her mother Maria was born in Lilley, Berkshire, she was baptised in 1819 in Catmore, Berkshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Hope (nee Neale) who were married in Catmore in 1818. Maria died in 1897 in Wantage, Berkshire.

Robert and Maria also had the following children baptised at Holy Cross, Sparsholt:

Mary Ann, 19th May 1844

Thomas, 22nd February 1846

Hannah, 16th April 1847

Elizabeth, 20th May 1849

John, 25th May 1851

Benjamin, 28th October 1855

Maria, 1857 (died 1857)

Maria 1858 (died 1858)

Triplets: Ann and Henry and Maria, 16th February 1858 (All died 1858, Ann and Maria in the March Q and Henry in the June Q)

Ellen Maria, 8th January 1860

Faith Hope Esther, 19th December 1866

In 1851 Robert Hains (36), a Farm Labourer, Maria (34), a Farm Labouer, Mary Ann (7), Thomas (5), Hannah (40 and Elizabeth (2), were living in the hamlet of Westcot, Sparsholt, Berkshire.

The 1861 census records Robert (44) as an Agricultural Labourer, living in Westcot Lane, in the hamlet of Westcote, Sparsholt, with Merriah (42) (Maria), Thomas (15), Elizabeth (12), John (10), Jane (8) Benjamin (6) and Ellen (1) (surname mistakenly recorded as Harris on ancestry)

Jane’s parents:

The 1871 census records Robert (56) as an Agricultural Labouerer, living in Westcote Road Cottages, Sparsholt, with Maria (53), Benjamin (15), an Agricultural Labouerer and Faith (4).

Robert (66), a Cowman and Maria (63) were recorded living in Westcot Lane, Westcot, Sparsholt in 1881

In 1891 Robert (75) and maria (72) were again recorded living in Westcot Lane. They were recorded living on the Parish (Parish Relief) and maria was recorded as an imbecile

Jane in later life:

By 1871 Jane (19) was working as a Servant at Hardwell Farm, Uffingham, Berkshire, for a widowed farmer Henry Reade (40).

The 1881 census records Jane (30) as a Domestic Cook, for an Edwin and Isabella London at 8 High Street, Maidstone, Kent.

The 1901 census records Jane (44) as sister-in-law at the home of her married sister Sarah Woodger (58) and her family, at Crescent House, Goodmans Fields, Whitechapel, London

In 1911 Jane (51) was working as a General Domestic Servant for a Miss Elizabeth Brand (82), at 49 Craven Road, Newbury, Berkshire.

The 1921 census records Jane aged 62 years 2 months as a Boarding House Keeper at 1 Wentworth House, Newbury, Berkshire.

Jane died aged 68 on the 15th August 1923. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th August, with her sister Elizabeth (buried 1921)
