Job Haines

1805-1874

Job was born on the 1st February 1805, he was baptised on the 24th February, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Joseph and Frances Haynes (nee Emmans) who were married on the 27th October 1792, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire.

Joseph and Frances also had the following children:

Giles Hains, baptised 23rd February 1794, in Bucklebury

Joseph Haynes, baptised 19th March 1797, in Thatcham

Joel Haines, baptised 22nd July 1798, in Thatcham

John Haynes, baptised 11th October 1801, in Thatcham

 

Job Hains married Ellen Hains on the 23rd April 1832 at St Laurence, Reading, Berkshire.

(Ellen was born Eleanor Cooper, she was baptised on the 29th May 1803 in Midgham, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah/Ann Cooper (nee Childs) who were married on the 20th February 1798, in Thatcham. Eleanor married Job’s bother, Joel Haines on the 19th October 1819 in Thatcham, Berkshire. They had the following children, John baptised 9th April 1820, in Thatcham, Mary baptised 12th August 1821, in Hampstead Norreys, Thomas baptised 23rd November 1823, in Hampstead Norreys, Fanny baptised 29th January 1826 and William baptised 10th August 1828 in Hampstead Norreys. Joel died aged 32, he was buried on the 23rd May 1830, at St Mary the Virgin, Bucklebury, Berkshire).

 

(Possible 1841 census recording on ancestry for: Job, Ellen, John, Mary and William as follows: John Harrison (50), Ellen Harrison (30), John Holms (20), Mary Holms (16) and William Holms (15), living at Clay Hill, Thatcham, Berkshire. (“Image almost illegible”)).

TO FARMERS

JOB HAINES CORN PORTER, & CO., (many years with Miss Clayton and her parents, as Corn Seller for them in Newbury Market), begs to inform his Friends and the Public generally, that he has commenced Business in the above Line, and hopes by strict attention and punctuality to merit a share of their patronage and support.

 

The 1851 census records Job Haines (46), as a Corn Porter, living at 4 Marsh Terrace, Speenhamland, Berkshire, with Ellen (47) and Ellen’s granddaughter Fanny Ann (6).

Slater’s Directory of Berkshire 1852, records Job as a Corn Porter, abode, Marsh. The 1854 Post Office Directory records him as a Corn Porter, abode, Newbury Wharf and the 1869 Kelly’s Directory records him as a Corn Merchant, abode, Canal Wharf

In 1861 Job (56) was recorded as a Master Corn Porter, living in Back Lane, Newbury, with Ellen (58) and Ellen’s granddaughters Fanny Ann Vickers (17), a Governess (child of her daughter Mary) and Alice Haines (10) (an orphan, child of Ellen’s late son William)

The 1871 census records Job (66) as a Corn Porter, living in Wharf Lane Newbury, with Ellen (68) and Ellen’s granddaughters, Alice Haines (20), a Milliner and Ellen Copperthwaite (6)

Job died aged 69, on the 20th May 1874. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 27th May.

Probate: HAINES Job    Effects: under £450    18th June 1874    The Will of Job Haines late of Newbury in the County of Berks Corn Porter who died 20th May 1874 at Newbury was proved at Oxford by Ellen Haines of Newbury Widow the Relict the sole Executrix

 

After Job’s death, the following appeared in the local newspaper:

MRS JOB HAINES

BEGS to return her sincere thanks to the Farmers and Corn Dealers generally, for the liberal support received by her late Husband for upwards of 20 years as Corn Porter, and begs to inform them that the business will in the future be carried on by herself, assisted by her granddaughter, and she begs respectfully to solicit a continuance of their favours

 

Ellen died aged 77 on the 15th October 1879. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th October.
