Albert Haines

1871-1871

Albert was born in Newbury, Berkshire, he was baptised on the 5^th March 1871, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Francis and Martha Ann Haines (nee Naylor) who were married in 1851 (marriage registered in Newbury)

Albert died aged 5 months on the 23^rd June 1871. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3^rd July.

Albert’s family:

His mother Martha Ann was born on the 26^th May 1832, she was baptised on the 17^th June 1855, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the daughter of Thomas (a Paper Maker, of West Mills, Newbury) and Charlotte Naylor (formerly Soper, nee Titcomb) who were married on the 22^nd May 1831, in Thatcham, Berkshire.

His father Francis was baptised on the 2^nd November 1828 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of John and Sarah Haines.

Francis and Martha Ann also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas:

Alfred Thomas born 1853, baptised 27^th November 1853

Martha Ann born 1855, baptised 25^th March 1855 (died aged 4 in 1859, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th November)

Alice Charlotte born 1856, baptised 25^th May 1856 (died aged 3 in 1859, buried as Charlotte in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th November)

Emily born 1858 (no baptism found. Died aged 13 in 1871, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24^th April)

Alice Martha born c1860, baptised 8^th April 1860

Henry born 1861, baptised 17^th November 1861

William Edwin born 1863, baptised 20^th September 1863

Charlotte Ann born 1865 (no baptism found. Died aged 1 in 1866, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 7^th December)

John born 1868, baptised 1^st November 1868 (died aged 1 in 1870, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th July)

In 1851 Francis Hains (22) was recorded as a General Labourer, living in Jack of Newbury Street, Newbury, with his wife Martha Ann (19) and his widowed mother-in-law, Charlotte Naylor (54), formerly a Needlewoman.

Martha Ann died aged 4 in 1859. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10^th November.

The 1861 census records Francis (32) as a Farmer’s Labourer, living in Quakers Building Ground, Cheap Street, Newbury, with Martha (28) and their children, Francis (8), Alfred (7), Emily (2) and Alice Martha (1)

In 1871 Francis (42), a Labourer, Martha (38), Emily (12), Alice (11), Henry (9), William Edwin (6), Walter Ernest (4) and Albert (2 months), were recorded living at 2 Porter’s Yard, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. (Surname recorded as Harres on ancestry)

On the 20^th January 1874 Francis, Martha and their children Alfred, Alice Martha, Henry, William Edwin, Walter Ernest and Sarah Kate, left England for a new life in New Zealand onboard the ship "Salisbury". The ship sailed from Gravesend, London on 5^th October 1873, and arrived in Wellington on 20 Jan 1874.

Francis took his own life (by hanging) aged 60, in 1893. Martha Ann died aged 80 in 1913 (both died in New Zealand)
