James John Boyt

1867-1949

James John, his parents, siblings and early life:

James John (aka John) was born on the 28^th November 1867 in Puddletown, Dorset, he was baptised on the 7^th January 1868 in Athelhampton with Burleston, Dorset, the son of John (a Farmer) and Anna Maria Boyt (nee Meadway) who were living in Puddletown, Dorset.

John and Anna Maria were married on the 5^th June 1855 in Cattistock, Dorset.

James John’s father John was baptised on the 29^th October 1834, in Puddletown, the son of John (a Butcher) and Amelia Boyt (nee Dominy) who were married in Puddletown on the 23^rd March 1828. John died on the 5^th December 1894 in Dorset.

His mother Anna Maria was baptised on the 5^th May 1833 in Cattistock, Dorset, the daughter of Joseph (a Butcher) and Eliza Meadway (nee Wills) who were married on the 4^th February 1833, in Cattistock (Joseph was a widower). Anna Maria died on the 13^th March 1924 in Pimperne, Dorset.

John and Anna Maria also had the following children:

Eliza bessie Annie, baptised 6^th June 1858 in Puddletown (dad recorded as a Butcher)

John James, baptised 7^th September 1859 in Puddletown (dad recorded as a Butcher) Died aged 6 months, buried on the 27^th February 1860 in Puddletown.

John Joseph Meadway, baptised 1^st June 1864 in Puddletown (dad recorded as a Butcher)

In 1861 John (26), a Butcher, Anna (28) and their daughter Eliza (2), were recorded living in New Street, Puddletown.

The 1871 census records James John (3) living in Salisbury Street, Blanford Forum, Dorset, with his father, John (37), a Butcher, employing 2 men and 2 boys, his mother Anna (38), his sister Eliza (12), his brother John Joseph (6) and his grandmother Eliza Meadway (58).

The 1881 census records James (13) and his brother John Joseph (16) (recorded as Joseph) as boarding scholars, in Frederick Street, (Masonic Hall) Melcombe Regis, Dorset. The census for this year records his father as a Farmer, living at Littleton Farm, Langton, Dorset, with his mother, his sister, his grandmother and a servant.

James in later life:

The 1891 census records James (23) as a Steam Engine Maker Turner, living at 18 Junction Road, Basingstoke, Hampshire.

James married in 1894.

James was widowed later that year, Mary died aged 29 (death registered in the December quarter 1894, in Lambeth)

By 1896 James was in a relationship with an Ada Jessie Stewart.

(Ada Jessie Jackson was born on the 23^rd August 1869 in St Saviour, Surrey, the daughter of Henry Frederick Thomas and Hannah Maria Jackson (nee Grant) who were married in 1858 in Portsea, Hampshire). Ada Jessie married George Keith Stewart in 1890, in Hampshire. They had two sons, George Keith, born 1890 (surname recorded as Stuart) and Leonard Walter, born 1891 (both births registered in Portsea Hampshire) By 1896 George and Ada had parted company. Their son George stayed with his father and Leonard stayed with his mother).

James and Ada had two daughters. Ada Mary, born in 1896 (birth registered in Greenwich) and Jessie Ruth born in 1899 (birth registered in Falmouth)

James (33), an Engine Fitter/Turner was recorded living at 19 Railway Cottages, Falmouth, Cornwall, with Ada (31), her son Leonard (9), their daughters Ada (4) and Jessie (2) (all surnames recorded as Bryd on ancestry) in the 1901 census.

The 1911 census records James (43) as an Engineer’s Turner, living at 1 Livingstone Villas, Queens Road, Newbury, with Ada (42) and their daughters Ada (15) and Jessie (2).

Electoral registers record the couple living at The Folly, Greenham, (1918-1921), 12 Madeira Place, Newtown Road, Newbury, (1925-1931), 60 Cheap Street, Newbury, (1933-1934), King’s Road in Newbury, (1936) and 46 Bartholomew Street, Newbury (1937-1938)

By 1921 Ada, aged 53 years 9 months, was living at 13 The Folly Greenham, Berkshire, with John, aged 53 years 7 months, who was working at Plenty & Son, Marine Engineers, as an Engine Turner. Their married daughter Ada Mary Hunter, aged 23 years 7 months and their grandson, Rex William Hunter, aged 1 year 7 months were also living with them.

James John Boyt and Ada Jessie M. Stewart married in 1925 in Southampton.

The 1939 register records Ada and James, a Marine Engineering Turner, living at 46 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Ada died aged 74 on the 18^th May 1944, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 20^th May.

James John died aged 81 on the 9^th October 1949, he was laid to rest with Ada, on the 12^th October.
