Mary Ann Batson

1829-1873

Mary Ann was born on the 21^st December 1829. She was baptised on the 17^th January 1830, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury Berkshire, the daughter of George and Melicent Allen (nee Purdue) who were married on the 5^th July 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Mary Ann’s mother Mellicent was born 27^th October 1802. She was baptised on the 3^rd December 1802, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of James and Hannah Purdue (nee Skinner) who were married on the 5^th July 1784, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Millescent/Millicent died aged 66 on the 23^rd May 1869, in Greenham. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29^th May.

Mary Ann’s father George was a Miller. He was born on the 25^th August 1804 in Newbury, Berkshire. George was baptised on the 16^th September 1804, the son of Thomas and Mary Allen (nee Hazell) who were married on the 12^th October 1797, at St Nicolas, Newbury. George died aged 66 in 1870, in Greenham. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd February.

The 1841 census records George (35), a Miller, Milicent (35), Mary (10), William (7), Hannah (5), Charlotte (2) and Emma (1), living in Stroud Green, Newbury, Berkshire.

In 1851 Mary (22) was working as a Servant, at 8 Northbrook Street, Newbury, for a James Bodman (54) a Draper, employing 4 men and two other servants.

Mary Ann, born 1859, in St Luke, Middlesex. (died aged 17 months, in 1861, buried 13^th Feb. 1861 in City of London, Tower Hamlets, Cemetery)

William, born 1861, in St Luke, Middlesex. (died soon after birth in 1861)

Thomas, born 1865, in St Luke, Middlesex

George, born c1870, in Bethnal Green

The 1861 census records David (34) a Porter, Mary Ann (32), Frederick (7) and George (5), living at 46 Banner Street, St Luke’s, Middlesex.

In 1871 David (43), Mary Ann (41), Frederick David (16), Thomas (6) and George (1), were living 15 Ellesmere Road, Bethnal Green, London.

Mary Ann died aged 43 on the 17^th April 1873, in London. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st April 1873. (She shares a grave with her younger sister, Hannah Allen (1835-1915))

David remarried on the 30^th August 1874, at St Stephen’s, Bow, Middlesex. His 2^nd wife was Susan Kirtland.

The 1881 and 1891 census records record David and Susan living in Ellesmere Road, Bethnal Green. In 1881 Thomas (16) and George (12) were recorded still living at home, by 1891 David and Susan were living alone.

David died aged 74 in 1901. (Death registered in the March quarter in Bethnal Green)
