Henry Seward was born in 1848 at Knowl Hill in Kingsclere, the son of James and Jane, nee Sutton, Seward. He was baptized on 28 April 1848 at St Mary in Kingsclere. In the 1851 and 1861 census he was living with his parents and siblings at Knowl Hill, his father James was a farm bailiff. No trace of Henry in the 1871 census.

 

Sarah Maria Pullin was born in 1849 in Vernham Dean in Hampshire, the daughter of John Edward and Elizabeth. She was baptized on 3 June 1849 at Vernham Dean. In the 1851 and 1861 census she was living with his parents at Stroud Green, her father John was a baker. In the 1871 census she was recorded with her parents at 17 Alton Place in Newbury and she was a dressmaker.

 

Henry and Sarah Maria married on 22 April 1873 at St Nicolas in Newbury.

 

A son Edward James was born in March 1874 in Newbury, Sadly Edward died aged 12 weeks on 10 June 1874. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 16 June. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 18 June 1874 as below.

 

SEWARD – Jan 10, at Westcombe’s Buildings, Edward James, son of Henry Seward, aged 12 weeks.

 

Henry and Sarah had a daughter Edith Annie on 25 May 1875 then another daughter Elizabeth in 1876. Elizabeth died aged 15 weeks on 27 October 1876. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 1 November. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 2 November 1876 as below.

 

SEWARD – October 27 at Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, Elizabeth, infant child of Henry Seward, aged 15 weeks.

 

Another son Alfred Henry was born in October 1878 followed by Herbert Sidney in October 1879. Herbert died aged only 2 months on 12 December 1879. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 17 December. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 18 December 1876 as below.

 

SEWARD – Dec. 12, at Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, Herbert Sidney, child of Henry Seward, aged two months.

 

A son Ernest was born in early 1881. Then in the 1881 census Henry and Sarah were recorded living at Westcombe’s Buildings in Newbury with daughter Edith Annie aged 5 and sons Alfred Henry aged 2 and Ernest aged 2 months. Henry was a carpenter.

 

Just over a year later on 9 September 1882 Alfred Henry died aged 3. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 13 September. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 14 September 1882 as below.

 

SEWARD – Sept. 9, at Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, Alfred Henry, the son of Henry and Sarah Seward, aged 3 years and 11 months.

 

Two years later in July 1884 another son Frederick was born. Sadly, for the family yet another child died as an infant and Frederick passed away on 26 August 1884 aged only 7 weeks. He was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 29 August. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 27 August 1884 as below.

 

SEWARD – Aug. 26, at 3 Westcombe’s Buildings, Newbury, Frederick, the son of Henry and Sarah Maria Seward, aged 7 weeks.

 

Another daughter Florence Jane was born in 1886 who died aged only 8 weeks on 1 September 1886. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 6 September. An announcement appeared in the Faringdon Advertiser and Vale of White Horse Gazette dated 4 September 1886 as below.

 

On the 1st inst., at 3 Westcombe’s Buildings, Florence Jane, daughter of Sarah Maria and Henry Seward, aged 8 weeks.

 

Henry and Sarah youngest child Gertrude Ida was born in 1889.

 

In the 1891 census Henry and Sarah were still living at Westcombe’s Buildings in Newbury with daughter Edith Annie aged 15, son Ernest aged 10 and daughter Gertrude Ida aged 1. Henry had no occupation recorded, Edith Annie was a pupil teacher and Ernest a scholar.

 

Sarah passed away on 22 March 1900 aged 52. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 26 March. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 29 March 1900 as below.

 

SEWARD – March 22, at 3 Albert Road, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Sarah Maria, the dearly loved wife of Henry Seward, aged 52 years.

 

The following year in the 1901 census Henry was living at 2 Albert Place in Newbury with daughters Edith aged 25 and Gertrude aged 11. Henry was recorded as a carpenter and Edith had no occupation recorded.

 

Henry died just over four years later on 15 June 1906 aged 59 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 18 June. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 21 June 1906 as below.

 

SEWARD – June 15, at 7 Albert Terrace, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Henry, only son of the late James Seward, of Station Road, Kingsclere, Hants, aged 59 years.

 

Henry and Sarah’s daughter Edith Annie married Edward James Ferry in Newbury in 1901 and she was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 22 January 1937.
