Sarah Ann, her parents, siblings and Early Life:

Sarah Ann Owens was born in 1855 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Hannah Owen (nee Flitter) who were married on the 30th September 1854 in Thatcham (Hannah’s surname mistakenly recorded as Frater)

Her father George was an Agricultural Labourer, he was baptised in 1822 in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of James and Mary Owen (nee Vince) who were married in 1809 in Bucklebury, Berkshire. George died aged 70 in the Newbury Workhouse on the 17th February 1886, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd February.

Her mother Hannah was baptised in 1833 in Thatcham, the daughter of William and Eliza Flitter. Hannah died aged 59 in 1891, she was buried on the 6th September at St Mary the Virgin, Chieveley.

George and Hannah also had the following children:

In 1861 Sarah (6) was living in Oare Street, Oare, Chieveley, Berkshire with her parents George (33) and Hannah (23), her sister Alice (4) and her brother Thomas (10 months)

In 1871 Sarah (15) was working as a General Domestic Servant for a Henry Morris (35), a Surveyor and Valuer and his family in St Mary Hill, Newbury.

Sarah in later life:

Sarah married Joseph Vickers in 1876 (marriage registered in Newbury)

They had the following children:
Emily Louisa c1878 (died aged 4 in 1882, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd October)

Joseph 1879 (died aged 1 day, was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th March)

Edith Maud 1880 (died aged 32 in 1912, buried in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd March, with her grandmother Martha Vickers who died in 1894)

Rose Amelia 1882 (died aged 84 in 1966, buried with her parents)

Martha c1885 (died aged 77 in 1962, buried with her parents, husband Albert John Giles and sister Rose Amelia Smith)

The 1881 census records Joseph (23) as a General Labourer, living in Greenham Street, Greenham, Berkshire with Sarah (24) and their daughters, Emily (3) and Edith (5 months).

In 1891 Joseph (34) was recorded as a Coal Heaver, living at 1, East End Cottages, Geenham, with Sarah (34), their daughters Edith (10), Minnie (8), Martha (6) and a lodger, Job Owen (24), a Carter. (Sarah’s brother)

The 1901 census records Joseph (45) as a Coal Porter Foreman, living at 3, York Road, Newbury with Sarah (45) and their daughters Edith (20), Rose (18) and Martha (16), all three girls were recorded as Laundresses.

The 1911 census records Joseph (55) as a Coal Porter, living at 57 York Road, Newbury with Sarah (56), Edith (30), Martha (25) and two young lodgers.

Joseph and Sarah continued to live at 57 York Road, Newbury until their deaths.

Sarah Ann died aged 73 on the 18th March 1929, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23rd March.

Joseph died aged 73 on the 13th May 1930, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the on the 17th May
