Edward Brice (aka George) was born on the 11th October 1886 in Greenham, Berkshire, the son of William (a Bricklayer) and Susan Emma (aka Emma) Vickers (nee Dixon) who were married in 1873 (marriage registered in Newbury)

Edward’s father William was born and baptised in 1851 in Greenham, the son of George and Martha Vickers (nee George) who were married on the 8th April 1833 in Greenham, Berkshire. William died aged 62 in 1916 (death registered in Newbury)

His mother Susan Emma (aka Emma) was born in1856 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, she was baptised on the 24th October 1856 in Ramsbury, the daughter of Martha Dixon, a single. (Susan has been recorded as the daughter of Matthias and Elizabeth Dixon in 1861 and a visitor of theirs in 1871, in Newbury, Matthias was Martha Dixon’s brother) Susan died aged 68 in 1922 (death registered in Newbury)

William and Susan also had the following children:

Census records 1881-1911 record the family living in Smith’s Buildings, Stroud Green, Greenham, Berkshire as follows:

1881: William (29), a Bricklayer, Susan E. (25), William H. (5), Arthur E. (4), Edith E. (2) and Louisa M. (4 months).

1891: William (43), a Bricklayer, Emma (39), Arthur (14), an Errand Boy, Edith (12), Florence (10), Ada (7), George (4) and Edwin (1).

1901: William (48), a Bricklayer, Emma (46), a Laundress, Arthur (24), a Wood Turner, George (15), a Butcher’s Assistant, and Edward (11)

1911: William (60), a Bricklayer, Emma (54), a Laundress, George (24), a Butcher’s Assistant and Edwin (21), a Bricklayer

Edward and his mother continued to live together at 15 Smith’s Buildings until 1922, when his mother died. He was also recorded living there until 1924.

From 1925-1927 he was living at 51 Salcombe Road, Newbury with his sister, Ada Fanny Hunt.

Edward married Emily Ethel Rolfe in 1927 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Emily was born in 1897, the daughter of Henry and Emily Rolfe (nee Fisher) who were married in 1881 in Kintbury, Berkshire)

After they were married Edward and Emily lived at 119-120 Bartholomew Street, Newbury. By 1931 they were living at 61, Boundary Road, Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Edward B. Vickers as a Sausage Maker/Cooked Meats Department, living at 61, Boundary Road, Newbury with his wife Emily Ethel.

Edward died aged 54 on the 7th March 1940, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 11th March.

(Emily Ethel remarried later that year (marriage registered in Newbury). Her 2nd husband was David Percy Smith. David died on the 3rd November 1861 in Bognor Regis, Sussex. Emily died aged 66 on the 9th April 1964 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with her 1st husband Edward Brice Vickers on the 14th April).
