John was born on the 8th May 1798, he was baptised on the 29th June 1798 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, Berkshire, with his sister Janetta (born 14th September 1795) the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Dell (nee Dundridge/Dandridge) who were married on the 6th January 1784 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Matthew and Elizabeth also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Newbury:

Charlotte 1790

Matilda 1801

The 1815 census of Newbury records John (17) living in West Mills, Newbury with his father Matthew (55), his mother Elizabeth (55), his sister Matilda (15) and George Dell (22) (possibly John’s brother, but no baptism found so might be a cousin as there is a baptism for a George Dell in 1794, son of William and Betty Dell).

John married Harriet Ward on the 30th January 1820 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.

They had the following children:

Caroline baptised on the 21st January 1821 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen

Cassandra baptised on the 19th January 1823 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen

Louisa baptised on the 30th January 1825 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen

Ellenor baptised on the 7th October 1827at St Nicolas Newbury

Alfred baptised on the 31st May 1829 at St Nicolas Newbury

 

Harriet died aged 31 in 1831, she was buried on the 7th March at St Nicolas Newbury

John remarried two months later in Burghclere, Hampshire (Banns 1st 8th and 15th May 1831). His 2nd wife was Mary Harvey. (Mary Ann)

(Mary Ann was born c1804 in Greenham, Berkshire)

The 1841 census records John (40) as a Painter, living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury with Mary (35) and his children Eleanor (13) and Alfred (12)

In 1851 John (52) and Mary (47) were recorded living in West Street, Newbury, John was recorded as a Painter-Master- Apprentice. (Surname recorded as Dall on ancestry)

The 1861 census records John (62) as a Plumber and Glazier, employing 2 men and 1 boy, living at Rose Cottage, West Street, Newbury with Mary Ann (57).

In 1871 John (72) was recorded as a Retired Plumber, living in Railway Terrace, Newbury with Mary Ann (67).

By 1877 John and Mary Ann were living in Knight’s Yard, Northbrook Street, Newbury.

John died aged 79 on the 28th May 1877, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th May. (Died of the effect of his attempt at suicide whilst in a state of unsound mind.)

Mary Ann died aged 75 on the 7th January 1879, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th January.
