James was baptised in Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire in 1794, the son of William and Mary Vince (nee Johnson) who were married in 1776 in Leckhampstead, Berkshire.

William and Mary also had the following children baptised in Shaw-cum-Donnington:

Betty in 1777

William in 1778

Thomas in 1780

Sarah in 1781

Mary in 1783

Rachel in 1785

Martha in 1787

Unknown in 1790

 

James married Elizabeth Dance in 1812 in Shaw-cum-Donnington

(Elizabeth was baptised on the 14th September 1788 in Baydon, Wiltshire, the daughter of Isaac and Mary Dance)

They had the following children baptised in Shaw-cum-Donnington:

Martha in 1813

William in 1814

George in 1816

Hannah in 1818

Charles in 1820

Daniel in 1822

In 1851 James (58) was working as a Brick Burner, he was living in Shaw-cum-Donnington, Berkshire with Elizabeth (62)

The 1861 census also records James (67), as a Brick Burner, he was living at Lockinge Kiln, Lockinge, Berkshire with Elizabeth (74).

In 1871 James was recorded as a widower, aged 81, living on Relief, lodging in Brick Kiln Lane, Shaw-cum-Donnington, with a Martha James (72) an Annuitant.

The 1881 census records James aged 90, as an Agricultural Labourer, living alone in Kiln Lane, Donnington.

James died aged 94 on the 3rd February 1885, in the Newbury Workhouse. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6th February.
