Hannah Butler (1791 – 1864)

Hannah Hamblin was baptized on 3 June 1791 at St Nicolas in Newbury, the daughter of Charles.

She married William Butler on 25 July 1837 at St Nicolas in Newbury. William was recorded as aged 45, a widower living in Kingsclere and a labourer. His father was William, a labourer. Hannah’s father Charles was recorded as a carpenter. The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Hamblin and Mary Ann Hamblin.

In the 1841 census William and Hannah were probably living in Ashford Hill and William was recorded as an agricultural labourer.

In the 1851 census Hannah was recorded living with her nephew Joseph Hamblin and three of his sisters in Bartholmew Street in Newbury. She was recorded as married and an agricultural labourer’s wife. William was not recorded in the house and so far no trace of him in the census.

William probably died in November 1858 and was buried on 3 December 1858 at St Nicolas in Newbury.

In the 1861 census Hannah was recorded living with two of her nieces Emma Hamblin and Laura Langfield at 4 King Johns Almhouses in Newbury. She was recorded as a widow and an alderwoman and late schoolmistress.

Hannah died January 1864 aged 72 at St Barts Hospital, St John in Newbury. She was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 27 January 1864.
