Mary was born on the 2nd December 1874 Greenham, Berkshire, the daughter of William (an Agricultural Labourer) and Jane Smith (nee Viner) who were married in 1863 (marriage registered in Newbury)

In 1881 Mary (6) was recorded as a boarder, living in Bury Street, Abingdon, Berkshire with her parents William (63) and Jane (48) and her siblings James (14), John (12) and Luke (10).

The 1891 census records Mary (16) as a General Domestic Servant, living at “The Greyhound” London Road, Newbury (Publican Frank Kimber)

Mary married Frederick Edward George Pearce in 1898 (marriage registered in Newbury)

They had the following children:

Gertrude Maud 1901 in Newbury

Beatrice May 1903 in Newbury

Frederick Henry John 1908 in Compton, Berkshire

Hilda Mary c1915 in Newbury

In 1901 Frederick (27) a Brewer’s Labourer and Mary (25) were living at 4 Diamond Cottages, (off Northcroft Lane) Newbury.

The 1911 census records Frederick (35) as a Farm Labourer, living in Horn Street, Compton, Berkshire with Mary (36) and their children Gertrude Maud (9), Beatrice May (7) and Frederick Henry John (2).

Frederick served as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment during the 1st World War, he died aged 43 on the 23rd January 1917, at the King Edward 7th Hospital Windsor, his body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th January  (see link below) http://www.fnrcnewbury.org.uk/persondetails.asp?PersonID=7586

The 1921 census records Mary living in Albert Road, Newbury with her children Frederick and Hilda.

Mary remarried in 1922, her 2nd husband was Harry Allder (marriage registered in Newbury)

Mary and Harry Allder were recorded living in Albert Road, Newbury until 1929.

By 1930 Harry, Mary and her son Frederick Henry John Pearce, were living at 1 Chestnut Place, Newbury.

The Electoral Registers 1934,1936,1937 and 1939 record Mary living with a Thomas Cleverly at 3 Bartholomew’s Almshouses, Newtown Road, Newbury.

The 1939 Register records Mary as a Companion to a Lady, in the household of her married daughter Beatrice Hosier and her family, at 71 Camp Close, Newbury. Harry, a Pork Butcher, was recorded as a Patient in the Newbury Workhouse.

Harry died aged 82 in 1944 (death registered in Newbury)

The 1957 Electoral Register records Mary living at 44 Chestnut Crescent with her daughter Beatrice Hosier and her grandchildren Betty Eileen and Francis Eric Hosier.

Mary died aged 83 in Fairmile Hospital on the 1st October 1958. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 4th October.
