Cassandra was baptised on the 19th January 1823 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of John (a Painter) and Harriet Dell (nee Ward) who were married on the 30th January 1820 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen.

John and Harriet also had the following children:

Caroline baptised on the 21st January 1821 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen

Louisa baptised on the 30th January 1825 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen

Ellenor baptised in 1827at St Nicolas Newbury

Alfred baptised in 1829 at St Nicolas Newbury

Cassandra’s mother Harriet died aged 31 in 1831, she was buried on the 7th March at St Nicolas Newbury

Her father remarried in 1831 in Burghclere (Banns 1st 8th and 15th May). His 2nd wife was Mary Harvey

In 1841 Cassandra Dill (15) was recorded as a Female Servant working for the Rev. Henry March (an Independent Minister) and his family at 164 Northbrook Street, Newbury.

The 1851 census records Cassandra (28) as a Nurse, visiting at the home of John and Mary Ann Walter in Cheap Street, Newbury. (Mary Ann had not long given birth to a daughter Letitia so Cassandra was probably there to help nurse mother and child)

Fathers: John Dell, a Painter and John Hermon, Deceased

Witnesses: William Herbert and Fanny Emma Bishop

(Charles was a Shoemaker, he was born c1811 in East Ilsley, Berkshire the son of John Sarah Harman (nee Silk) who were married in East Ilsley in 1810.  He married Anne Fulbrook in 1835 in Hungerford, Berkshire. They had 7 children, (3 died young). Ann died in 1849. Charles remarried in 1851, his 2nd wife was Mary Dodd. They had 2 sons (both died soon after birth) and a daughter. He was widowed again in 1856.)

 

 

Charles committed suicide on the 18th March 1858 aged 45, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th March.

The 1861 census records Cassandra (36) in the household of Arthur Snow, Curate of Eltham and his family in High Street Eltham, Kent (no occupation recorded for Cassandra)

In 1871 aged 42, she was working as a Nurse, in Eccles Old Road, Pendleton, Lancashire.

The 1881 census records her aged 52 working as a Nurse in Priory Bail Street, Folkestone, Kent.

Cassandra died aged 61 on the 6th April 1884 in New Street, Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire, her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th April.

 

Probate: HERMON Cassandra    Personal Estate £42       13 May 1884     The Will of Cassandra Hermon formerly of 22 Ladbrooke-gardens Bayswater in the County of Middlesex but late of New-street Henley on Thames in the County of Oxford Widow who died 6th April 1884 at New-street was proved at the Principal Registry by Louisa Herbert (Wife of William Herbert) of 205 Stanhope-street Regent’s Park in the County of Middlesex the sister the sole Executrix
