According to the 1901 census Constance was born in County Tipperary, Ireland. Her birth was registered in Newbury in the June quarter 1895. Constance was the daughter John Henry and Mary (married as Grace Mary) Alder (nee Breen) who were married on the 1st May 1892 at St Patrick’s Church, Cork, Ireland.

Her father John Henry was born in 1866 in Paddington, London, the son of Charles and Mary Ann Alder (nee Tidbury) who were married on the 23rd October 1842 (marriage registered in Newbury). John joined the Army aged 19, on the 8th March 1886. At the time of his enlistment, he was recorded as a Butcher. He served as a Private in the Royal Berkshire Regiment and was discharge on the 8th February 1902. John died aged 55 in 1922 (death registered in Newbury­).

Her mother Mary was born on the 1st March 1872 in Ballyknockane (in the Union of Thurles) Tipperary, Ireland, the daughter of Denis (a Herdsman) and Anto Breen (nee Mara) who were married on the 21st January 1869 in the Roman Catholic Chapel, Templetuohy, Tipperary.

John Henry and Mary also had a daughter, Henrietta, born in 1893 (birth registered in Weymouth Dorset).

The 1901 census records Constance (6) (recorded as Irene) living at 3 Denmark Road, Newbury, with her mum Mary (28), her sister Henrietta (8), her uncle, George Breen (29) and her mother’s cousin, Tom Teahy (26).

Constance died aged 12 on the 5th April 1907, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th April.

The 1911 census records her parents John and Mary living separately. John (43) was recorded working as a Groom, boarding with an Alfred and Jessie Lane, in Riverside, Greenham, Berkshire. Mary (38) was recorded working as a Carriage and Motor Lining Maker, living at 13 Bywater Street, Chelsea, London. She was still living in Bywater Street in 1921.
