Emma, her parents, siblings and early life:

Emma was born in Caversham, Oxfordshire, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Sharp (nee Griffiiths) who were married on the 13th September 1819 at St Giles, Reading, Berkshire. ((Mary Elizabeth was recorded as Elizabeth on the marriage record)

Her father Joseph was born c1793 in Wyggeston, Northamptonshire (son of Thomas Sharp). Joseph was widowed sometime between 1829-1847. (No other information found for Mary Elizabeth). Joseph remarried on the 20th September 1847 at St Mary the Minster, Reading. 2nd wife Ruth Hodgson (born c1796 in Reading), a spinster. Joseph died aged 70 in 1856, he was buried on the 8th June at St Peter Caversham. Ruth remarried on the 19th July 1858 at St Mary the Minster, Reading, her 2nd husband was William Dormer. She was widower in 1863 and died aged 86 in 1881 in Oxfordshire.

Joseph and Mary Elizabeth also had the following children:
Henry born c1820 in Reading, baptised 23rd January 1820 at St Giles, Reading

Elizabeth and Charlotte born in Caversham, baptised 6/2/1825 (possibly twins, not proved)

Caroline born c1826 in Caversham, baptised 22/10/1826

Mary Elizabeth born c1830 in Caversham, baptised 26/12/1830

Emma in later life:

In 1841 Emma (18) and her sister Caroline (15) were working as a Female Servants in Wolverton Hampshire.

Emma married in 1843.

(Samuel was a Millwright, he was born on the 18th April 1817 in Newbury Berkshire and was baptised on the 14th May at Northcroft Lane Meeting House, Newbury, (Baptist) the son of John and Sarah Freeman (nee May) who were married on the 31st August 1800 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

Emma and Samuel had the following children:

Mary Elizabeth 1846 in Reading

Charlotte 1849 in Reading (died 1849)

Charlotte 1850 in Reading

John 1852 in Reading

Louisa 1855 in Newbury

Fanny c1858 in Newbury

Emily 1861 in Newbury

Richard Thomas c1864 in Newbury (died in 1865, buried in a private grave in the NRC on the 1st December)

Charles Sharp 1867 in Newbury

In 1851 Emma (26) was living in Kings Road, Reading, Berkshire with Samuel (33) and their children Samuel Henry (6), Mary Elizabeth (4) and Charlotte (11 months). Also recorded living in the household was Emma’s sister Charlotte Sharp (28).

By 1861 the family were living in West Mills, Newbury. Both the 1871 and 1881 census records also record Samuel and Emma living in West Mills.

By 1891 Emma and Samuel (now retired), were lodging with their widowed daughter Louisa Wood (34) at 17 Craven Street, Newbury. Also recorded in the household were Louisa’s children Fanny (11), Alfred (10) and Samuel (8), Louisa’s brother Charles Sharp Freeman (23), Louisa’s aunt, Charlotte Sharp (69) and a boarder, George Carter (18).

By 1901 Emma and Samuel were living at 10 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury.

Samuel died aged 89 on the 7th May 1906, he was laid to rest in a family grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th May.

The 1911 census records Emma (88) living at 144 London Road, Reading with her daughter Louisa Newton (55) (formerly Wood, nee Freeman), her son-in-law Frederick William Newton (60), her granddaughter Gladys Newton (13) and a boarder Percy John Adey (21).

Emma died aged 94 on the 12th March 1917 in Reading, her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th March with her husband Samuel (buried 1906). Their son John Freeman (buried 1879), daughter Charlotte Bryant (buried 1886), granddaughter Fanny Louisa Wood (buried 1896), son Samuel Henry Freeman (buried 1920), daughter-in-law Mary Anna Freeman (buried 1928) and daughter Caroline Offer (buried 1929) are also buried with them in the family plot.
