Ernest Arthur Penn (1858 – 1858)

 

 

Alfred Penn was born on 7 January 1818 in Northampton. He married Harriett Emma James on 6 April 1844 at St Mary, Bryanston Square in Westminster.  Harriett was born circa 1816 in Horton in Dorset.

 

Alfred and Harriett moved to Newbury soon after the marriage. Their first child Elizabeth Emma was born in 1845 in Newbury, followed by Alfred in 1847 and Kate in 1850.

 

In the 1851 census Alfred and Harriett with the three children and two servants were living at 11 Northbrook Street in Newbury. Alfred was recorded as a shoe manufacturer employing three men.

 

Alfred and Harriett had another six children all born in Newbury, Clara Louisa in 1851, Walter in 1852, Frederick Denston in 1854, Charles Henry in 1856, Ernest Arthur in 1858 and Edwin Arthur in 1860.

 

Ernest Arthur was born circa February 1858 in Newbury. Sadly, Ernest died in June 1858 aged 4 months and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 9 June 1858.

 

In the 1861 census Alfred and Harriett were still living at 11 Northbrook Street along with their eight surviving children. Alfred was recorded as a boot and shoe manufacturer.

 

Alfred and his family moved away from Newbury in 1866, an announcement in the Reading Mercury of 15 September 1866 thanked friends and also for those who supported his business.

 

Alfred and Harriett and children were living in Chelsea in 1871. Harriett died in Croydon in 1887. Alfred was then recorded in Penge in the 1891 census. He died 29 April 1898 and was buried in  Beckenham Cemetery.
