Emily Cooper

c1833-1873

Emily was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Daniel and Frances Alway (nee Northway) who were married on the 27^th December 1817 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire.

Her father Daniel was a Carpenter. He was baptised on the 24^th February 1791 in Bucklebury, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Sarah Alway (nee Clarke) who were married on the 27^th October 1788 at St Mary Bucklebury. Daniel died aged 84 in 1873, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16^th August.

Her mother Frances was baptised on the 27^th November 1796 at St Mary Thatcham, Berkshire. Frances died aged 75 in 1869, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Rod Cemetery on the 26^th November

Daniel and Frances also had the following children:

Matilda baptised 3^rd October 1819 in Thatcham

Sarah baptised 22^nd July 1821 in Thatcham

Henry baptised 7^th June 1829 at St Mary Reading

Mary born c1835

Daniel and his family were recorded living in St Mary’s Hill Newbury from 1841 -1871.

Emily was recorded living at home with her parents and siblings in both the 1841 and 1851 census records.

Emily married Andrew Adams in 1854.

They had three sons, Henry born 1855, David Robert born 1857 (died aged 1 in 1859, buried in the NRC on the 11^th February) and William born 1862 (died aged 3 in 1865, buried in the NRC on the 31^st March).

The 1861 census records Emily (26) living in St Mary’s Hill, Newbury with Andrew (29) a Bricklayer’s Labourer and their son Henry (6).

Andrew Adams died aged 35 in 1864, he was buried in the NRC on the 19^th August.

Emily remarried in 1867, her 2^nd husband was a widower, John Cooper.

(John was born in Basildon, Berkshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Cooper (nee Champ) who were married on the 30^th November 1835 in Hampstead Norris, Berkshire. He married Emma Perris (nee Bradley) in 1862. They had a daughter Sophia born in 1862. John was widowed in 1866)

In 1871 John and Emily had a son Thomas William born in 1867.

In 1871 John (30) was recorded as a Bricklayer’s Labourer, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Emily (37), Sophia (7) and Thomas William (3). Emily’s son Henry was recorded living with his grandfather Daniel Alway.

Emily died aged 40 in 1873, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28^th June.

 John married again in 1878. His 3^rd wife was Martha Kewell (a widow).

(Martha was born c 1844 in Chisbury Wiltshire. She was baptised on the 17^th March 1844 in Little Bedwyn Wiltshire, the daughter of Henry and Anne Chandler. (nee Baldwin) who were married on the 3^rd February 1839 in Little Bedwyn.(Henry’s surname was recorded as Chandler alais Clifford on the marriage record). Martha married Robert Kewell in 1866. They had a son William born c1867, a son Joseph born c1869, (died aged 2 in 1871, buried on the 5^th February at St Michael and All Angels Enborne), a daughter Annie Elizabeth born 1871 Robert Kewell died aged 37 in 1873, he was buried on the 15^th April at St Michael and All Angels Enborne) Martha also had a daughter Alice born in 1875.

John and Martha had a son Frederick William born in 1879.

The 1881 census records John (40) as a Labourer, he was again recorded living in Northcroft Lane. Also recorded in the household were Martha (38), Thomas William Cooper (13), Annie Kewell (7), Alice Kewell (5) and Frederick Cooper (17 months).

John died aged 53 in 1891 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 6^th April.
