Mary Jane was born in Newbury, she was baptised in the 17th June 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the daughter of Henry and Mary Hopson (nee Garland) who were married on the 15th April 1832 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Her mother Mary as born on the 14th December 1810 in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 3rd March 1811 at the Lower Meeting House (Independent) Newbury, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Garland (nee Maslin) who were married on the 20th January 1807 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

Her father Henry was baptised on the 16th May 1813 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of William and Jane Hopson (nee Ledyard/Liddard)** who were married on the 2nd August 1790 at St Nicolas Church Newbury.

** Jane’s surname spelt Ledyard on baptism record and Liddard on marriage record

Mary Jane’s siblings were:

Sophia baptised 30th April 1834 (died aged 2 in 1836, she was buried on the 19th August at St Nicolas Newbury).

Esther baptised 8th July 1836

The 1841 census records Mary (9) living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with her father Henry (25), a Bricklayer, her mother Mary (30), a Dressmaker and her sister Esther (5).

Mary Jane’s mother Mary died aged 40 on the 25th August 1851, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th August.

Mary Jane’s father Henry died aged 39 on the 21st May 1852, he was buried with his wife Mary on the 26th May.

Mary Jane married Stewart Nalder Hasell in 1852 (marriage registered in Newbury)

They had a son George born in Newbury in 1856.

Mary Jane died aged 26 on the 5th July 1858, she was buried with her parents on the 10th July.

Stewart remarried in Newbury in 1859, his 2nd wife was Sarah Sargent. They moved to Surrey. Sarah died in 1869. Stewart married again in 1871, his 3rd wife was a widow, Louisa Hippesley. He was widowed again in 1908 and died aged 79 in 1909 in Surrey.
