Sarah Ann Legg was born in Marshwood Dorset, the daughter of John (a Thatcher) and Mary Legg (nee Paul(l)) who were married in 1833 in Crewkerene, Dorset.

In 1841 Sarah (4) was living in Pilsdon Dorset with her parents John (35) and Mary (25) and her sisters Hannah (6) and Ann (1) (recorded on ancestry as Jean).

The 1851 census records Sarah (14) living in Long Hays, Marshwood, Dorset with her parents and her brother John (7).

The 1861 census records Sarah (23) as a Servant, she was visiting George and Eliza Oxenbury and their family in Symondsbury Village, Dorset.

 

Sarah married James Quinting in 1861.

(James was born on the 20th August 1833 in Hawkchurch Dorset, he was baptised on the 2nd March 1834 at Morcombe Lake Independent, Dorset the son of Samuel (a Labourer) and Mary Quintin (nee Gayer/Gaylor) who were married in 1808 in Allington, Dorset).

James and Sarah had the following children:

Elizabeth Jane Quintin 1861, baptised 19th January 1862 in Bettiscombe

Samuel Quintin 1862, baptised 19th April 1863 in Bettiscombe

Alice Mary Quinton 1864, baptised 30th July 1865 in Dorchester

James John Quinton 1866, baptised 31st July 1866 in Fordington (died 1867)

Sarah Ann Quinton 1867, baptised 8th December 1867 in Marshwood

Bessie Quinton 1868, baptised 19th May 1869 in Fordington (died 1869)

 

In 1871 Sarah (33), James (38) an Agricultural Labourer, Eliza Jane (9), Samuel (8), Alice (7) and Sarah Ann (3) were living in Wraxwall, Dorset (surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry)

 

The 1881 census records Sarah (44) living in Quarkers Burial Ground, Newbury with James (49) a Labourer and their children Samuel (19) a Labourer and Sarah Ann (13) (surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry)

By 1891 James (58) and Sarah (58) were living at 2 Crown Place, Newbury, Berkshire, James was working as a Drayman. (Surname recorded as Quinton on ancestry)

Sarah Ann Quintin died 59 on the 26th November 1898, she was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 30th November.

The 1901 census records James Quinton (70) in the Southampton Workhouse he was suffering from Stricture, and was recorded as a Pauper/General Labourer.

 

James Quinton died aged 71 in 1903 in the Newbury Workhouse, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September. (Surname registered as Quinton at time of death)
