Mary Ann was born in Woolhampton, Berkshire, the daughter of Daniel and Jane Sangwell (nee Lewis) who were married on the 16th July 1810 at St Peter, Woolhamptson, Berkshire.

Her father Daniel was born c1789 in Woolhampton, Berkshire.

Her mother Jane was born in Midgham, Berkshire, she was baptised in 1789 in Midgham, the daughter of Richard and Mary Lewis.

The 1841 census records Mary Ann (10) living at Foot Hill, Aldermaston, Berkshire, with her father Daniel (50), a Labourer, her mother Jane (50) and her sister Letiticia (15).

The 1851 census records Mary Ann (20) as a Dressmaker, living with her parents and sister Eliza Maria (12) in Bath Road, Aldermaston. By 1861 Daniel (72), Jane (71) and Mary Ann (28) were living in Woolhampton. Mary Ann was still working as a Dressmaker.

In 1871 all three were again recorded living in Woolhampton. Mary Ann (40) was recorded as a Housekeeper/General Servant in the census for this year.

Mary Ann’s mother Jane died aged 82 in 1871, she was laid to rest on the 2nd July at St Peter Woolhampton.

Her father Daniel died aged 84 in 1873, he was laid to rest on the 16th April at St Peter Woolhampton.

Mary Ann married in 1876.

(John was baptised on the 2nd September 1810 at St Mary Ovington, Essex, the son of Joseph and Mary Foster).

In 1881 John (70), was recorded as a Retired Clothier. He was living in Westfields Newbury Berkshire with Mary Ann (50).

John died aged 74 on the 12th June 1885 he was laid to rest in an unconsecrated brick grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th June.

 

In 1891 Mary Ann (60) was living on her own means at 1 Prospect Villas, Gloucester Road, Newbury with a Grace Loder (25) a General Domestic Servant.

The 1901 census again records her living at 1 Prospect Villas with a General Domestic Servant, Ellen Knight (18).

Mary Ann died aged 77 on the 28th August 1908 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 1st September.
