Ann Saphwell was baptised in Amersham, Buckinghamshire in 1789, the daughter of Nathaniel and Alice Saphwell (nee Timberlake) who were married on the 10th July 1786 in Sarrat Hertfordshire.  (Nathaniel’s name was recorded as Nath. Saffwell)

Nathaniel and Alice also had the following children baptised in Amersham:

James Saphwell 1792

Keziah Saphwell/Sophwell 1793

 

Ann married William Legg on the 15th March 1812 in Amersham (Ann’s surname recorded as Suphwall,Safwell,Sidwell and Sapwell).

(William was baptised in 1790 at St Nicolas Church Newbury the son of William and Christian Legg (nee Jennings) who were married on the 23rd December 1788 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

William and Ann had a daughter Hannah baptised in Amersham in 1812.

By 1815 the family were living in Newbury where Ann gave birth to their 2nd daughter Caroline who was baptised in 1815 at St Nicolas Church (surname spelt Legge).

The 1815 census of Newbury records William (26), as a Chair Maker, living on the west side of Newtown Lane, Newbury with Ann (26) their daughters Hannah (3), Caroline (an infant) and an Alice Saffield (50).

In 1841 Ann (55) was recorded as Independent, living in the parish of St Nicolas, Newbury, (near the Wharf) also living with her were her married daughter Caroline Winter (25), a Dressmaker and her granddaughter Louisa Winter (5 months). (Caroline married Jonathan Winter on the 3rd January 1836 at St Nicolas Church Newbury)

The 1851 census records Ann (70) as a visitor at the home of her daughter Caroline Winter (35) and her grandchildren Louisa (10), Jonathan (8), Caroline (4) and Alice (2) in Gould’s Yard, Cheap Street, Newbury.

The 1861 census records Ann (72) living in Cheap Street, Newbury with her son-in-law Jonathan Winter (46), a Bargeman, her daughter Caroline Winter (45) and her grandchildren Louisa ((20), Caroline (14) and Alice (12).

Ann died in 1869, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th November. (Age at death recorded as 83).
