Peter New was born in Thatcham Mar qtr of 1862 and grew up at 75 Chapel Street, Thatcham, the second youngest of seven children born to his parents, Henry New & Elizabeth Randall.
His siblings were Mary (b.1844), Louisa (b.1847), Rosanna (b.1850), William (b.1856), Jesse (b.1858) and Lavinia b.1866).
His parents, grandparents and great-grandparents were all Ag Labs dating back to 1755 originating from Kingsclere in Hampshire. Peter's father died in Jul 1876 and by the 3rd Apr 1881 the Census records him as living with his mother at 6 Lisle Court, Newbury.
Hw was 20, his occupation is a Labourer, and his mother Elizabeth's occupation is a Chairwoman.

In Apr 1885, aged 23, he married Annie Louisa Teal (aged 18) in Newbury when they likely moved into her family home with his Step-father William, Step-mother Maria and Annie's two brothers and five sisters at 1 Lennox Place, Newbury.

His Step-father William died in Jan 1891 and by the 5th April 1891 Census his Step mother and her four youngest children had moved to 13 Denmark Road, leaving Peter and Annie living at I Lennox Place with their two children, son Peter William (aged 4) a scholar, and daughter Gertrude "Gertie" (aged 6 months). His occupation was listed as a Platelayer for the Great Western Railway.
On the 31 Mar 1901 Census Peter was recorded as living at Gosport Villa, Kings Road, Newbury with his wife Annie, his Son Peter William (who now was 14 and working as a Grocer's Porter), Gertie (now 10) and Leonard James (aged 7)  Also registered as living with them were 3 boarders: Louie, 22, an Ironer, Washer and Laundry woman, Albert, 25, ?self-employed Oil Merchant, and William, 30, a Travelling Canvasser for sewing machines.
