1850-1897

William George Hall was born in Hampstead Marshall, Berkshire, the illegitimate son of Mary Hall. His mother married William Brazier later that year and William George was then known as William George Brazier.

 

His mother Mary was born in Kingsclere c1833, the daughter of Daniel and Harriet Hall (nee Piper) who were married on the 18th October 1832 in Kingsclere.

 

William Brazier was a Shepherd, he was baptised on the 2nd November 1828 at St Mary Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Brazier (nee Field) who were married on the 9th March 1826 at St Mary Kintbury.

In 1851 William (10 months) was recorded living with parents William, and Mary, in Kintbury, Berkshire.

 

The 1861 census records William (10) as a Shepherd Boy, living in Dibley’s Yard, Newbury with his parents and siblings. By 1871 the family had moved to Enborne. William was recorded in the census for this year as a Farm Labourer.

 

The 1881 census records William (30) as a Labourer, lodging in the City, Newbury.

 

William married Ann Sturgess in 1884

(Ann was born in 1854, she was baptised on the 7th January 1855 at St Mary Kintbury, the daughter of Alfred and Fanny Sturgess/Sturges (nee Gigg) who were married on the 6th November 1845 at St Mary Kintbury (Fanny’s surname was recorded as Gregg)

The 1891 census records William (39) as a Maltster’s Labourer living at 4 Edward’s Cottages, St John’s Road, Newbury with his wife Ann (38) and his father-in-law Alfred Sturgess (71), an Agricultural Labourer.

 

William died aged 47 on the 22nd July 1897, (funeral service held at St John the Evangelist Newbury) he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th July.

 

In 1901 Ann (48) was working as a Laundress, living in Newbury.

 

The 1911 census records Ann (58) as a Seamstress living at 4 Pleasant Place, St John’s Road, Newbury.

 

By 1927 she was living in an Almshouse in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

 

She died on the 21st March 1927 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th March.
