Henry was born in Enborne, Berkshire, the son of John and Sarah Bellinger (nee Bolsher) who were married in 1840 (marriage registered in Newbury).

 

His father John was baptised in 1799 in Greenham, the son of Charles and Hannah (aka Anne) Bellinger (nee Waite) who were married in 1795 in Bucklebury Berkshire.

 

His mother Sarah was born c1816 in West Woodhay, Hampshire.

 

John and Sarah also had the following children:

Thomas 1841

George c1846 (died aged 11 in 1858, buried 22nd April at St Michael and All Angels Enborne)

William 1849

Sarah Ann 1852 (died aged 8 weeks, buried 16th December 1852 at St Michael and All Angels Enborne).

 

The 1841 and 1851 census records record John living in Skinner’s Green, Enborne with his family.

The 1841 census records the family as John (40), Sarah (25) and a John Bolsher (7).

The 1851 census records the family as John (51), Sarah (35) and their sons Thomas (9), Henry (7), George (5) and William (1).

 

Henry’s mother Sarah died aged 36 in 1852 not long after giving birth to her daughter Sarah Ann. She was buried on the 24th October at St Michael and All Angels Enborne.

 

Henry’s father remarried in 1859 (marriage registered in Newbury), his 2nd wife was Sarah Hazell. Sarah was baptised in 1819 in Greenham the daughter of Joseph and Phoebe Hazell (formerly Major, nee Tidbury). Sarah had at least two illegitimate children before she married John, Harriet born in 1841, baptised in Greenham in 1841 and Elizabeth born in 1845, baptised in Greenham in 1847.

 

John and Sarah had two children, Charles born in 1857 (born before his parents married) and George born in 1859. Both boys were baptised in 1859 in Greenham.

 

In 1861 Henry (17) was recorded as an Agricultural Labourer living with his father John (58), his stepmother Sarah (40), Sarah’s daughter Elizabeth Hazell (16) his brother William (11) and his half-brothers Charles (3) and George (1) in Skinner’s Green, Enborne.

 

John (71), Sarah (49) their sons Charles (13), George (11) and Sarah’s grandson Henry William Hazell (2) were still living in Skinner’s Green in 1871.

Henry (27) and his brother William (20) were recorded a Labourers, boarding with a John Clark (44), his wife Caroline (47) and their son William (11) at 4 Enborne Road, Newbury.

 

Henry’s stepmother died aged 53 in 1873 she was laid to rest on the 7th May at St Michael and All Angels Enborne.

 

Henry married Harriet Matilda Alway in 1873 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Harriet was born c1853 in Newbury, the daughter of Jesse and Eliza Alway (nee Langton) who were married in 1846 in Newbury).

 

Harriet had a daughter, Jane, born c1873 before she married Henry.

 

Henry and Harriet had the following children:

Edith 1878

Emily 1880

 

Henry died aged 37 on the 19th March 1880, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 24th March.

 

In 1881 his father was recorded living with his married son William (31) and his family at Wash Farm, Newbury.

 

John died aged 83 in the Newbury Workhouse on the 30th December 1882, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 3rd January 1883.

 

In 1881 Harriet (28) and her 4 daughters were living in Cromwell Place, Newbury. In 1891 she was living in Bartholomew Place, Newbury with her 3 youngest daughters. The 1891 census records her living at 8 Trafalgar Place, Newbury. Her married daughter Edith Withers (22) and her grandchildren James W Withers (7) and Blanche E Withers (1) were also recorded in the household.

 

Harriet remarried in 1907, her 2nd husband was James Young, a widower.

(James was a Bricklayer he was born c1847 in Greenham. His 1st wife was Caroline (nee Bradfield (born Caroline Adams)), she died in 1905).

 

In 1911 James and Harriet were living separately.

James was recorded living with his married daughter Sarah Hosier and her family in Derby Road, Newbury.

Harriet was recorded as a Charwoman, living at 8 Trafalgar Place, Newbury. Also recorded living in the household were her nephew Thomas Jesse Smith (22), a General Labourer and her granddaughter Blanche Withers (11).

 

James Young died aged 68 on the 8th February 1916, his obituary records that he had been living with his daughter Sarah Hosier for about 8 years before his death (no record of Harriet attending the funeral).

 

Harriet died aged 79 in 1931 (death registered in Newbury)
